Several Cal Poly wrestlers participated in the 2013 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this past weekend held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Cal Poly freshman 149-pounder Blake Kastl led the way for the Mustangs with an eighth-place finish on the final day of competition. Kastl cruised through the preliminary rounds and won a 4-2 decision over Natrelle Demison of Air Force in the fourth round, but fell to both Scott Sakaguchi of Oregon State on a 4-2 decision and Brian Hamaan of North Carolina State on a medical default.
Another Mustang wrestler who qualified for the quarterfinals was 157-pounder Maximillian Schneider. Schneider was eliminated in the fourth round of wrestlebacks when he defaulted to a tough competitor in Robert Burg of Navy, who eventually placed 7th.
Cal Poly’s 133-pounder Devon Lotito lost a 4-2 decision also in the fourth round of wrestlebacks Saturday. Lotito placed third in the tournament a year ago, but failed to do so this year.
Seven other Mustang wrestlers failed to advance to the quarterfinals on the weekend.
Out of a 33-team field tournament, Cal Poly finished 24th with 21 points, while Oklahoma won the invitational with 154.5 points.
Cal Poly returns to the mat with a non-conference dual meet at Cal Baptist on Dec. 16.
