The Cal Poly wrestling team lost its season-opening meet 35-6 on Monday against Stanford in the Mott Athletics Center.
Stanford won nine out of ten matches in the first Pac-12 dual meet for both schools.
Cal Poly’s only win came from 197-pound junior J.T. Goodwin. After taking down Stanford’s Michael Sojka two minutes into the match, Goodwin pinned his opponent three seconds later to secure the win.
The dual meet was originally planned to be outdoors in the Julian A. McPhee University Union plaza, but was moved indoors due to rain.
Although none of the Mustangs’ wrestlers are ranked, they fought hard from the start, with junior 184-pounder Mitch Woods forcing his match against Stanford’s Peter Galli into overtime. Woods lost 12-10 in a sudden decision after being on the wrong end of a takedown in the first overtime period.
Cal Poly junior Colt Shorts’ comeback fell short as well, losing a 5-3 decision to Stanford’s Max Hvolbeck. Shorts was down 5-1 early in the match, rallying close to victory.
To win the opening match, Stanford notched one fall, recorded by No. 13 Paul Fox against Cal Poly redshirt freshman Glenn Farina, and five other major decisions.
The Mustangs will compete at San Francisco State in their next meet this Saturday at 2 p.m.
