Coming off its first Big West Conference loss on Sunday to UC Santa Barbara, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team looks to bounce back tonight at Pacific.
The Mustangs (8-7, 3-1) are in fourth place in the conference coming into this weekend’s slate of games, but would still win the Big West if they win the remainder of their matches.
“I told the team, ‘We’re still in control of our own destiny,’ ” Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said.
The Mustangs will have to contain forward Kristina Wavomba if they hope to get back on track.
Wavomba leads the Tigers (8-6-1, 3-2-1) with seven goals and 15 points. The freshman does not get a lot of shots on goal, but has been accurate with her opportunities, scoring all her goals on just 12 shots on goal.
The loss to UCSB provided the first road block in conference play for Cal Poly, which gave up a season-high four scores.
“The players feel like we didn’t play as well as we could have,” Crozier said. “We made some mistakes that we paid for. Santa Barbara did a good job and they punished us for it.”
The Mustangs are only 3-4 at home this season despite leading the Big West in attendance, but are 5-1 on the road – a stat that may bode well for two weekend games away from San Luis Obispo.
Today’s contest begins at 7 p.m., and Sunday’s at UC Davis starts at noon.
