The Cal Poly women’s soccer team was eliminated from the Big West Conference tournament by Cal State Fullerton on penalty kicks Thursday night.
The Titans’ goalkeeper Katie Pulliam stopped two Cal Poly penalty kicks — including a final one by senior midfielder Haley Walker — while Cal State Fullerton converted all four attempts to dispatch the No. 1-seeded Mustangs in the semifinal round of the tournament.
Cal State Fullerton (8-6-6, 3-3-2 Big West) moves on to face UC Riverside in the tournament final on Sunday. The winner will advance to the NCAA tournament.
Cal Poly (11-7-1, 7-1-0) opened the scoring with a penalty-kick goal by junior midfielder Sara Lancaster after she was brought down in the box in the 27th minute. The Titans responded with a 37th-minute equalizer from Nikki McCants to knot the score at one.
Despite playing two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team would score the rest of the way, sending the game to penalties where the Titans eventually bested Cal Poly, 4-3.
It was announced earlier in the week that eight Cal Poly players earned all-conference honors this season.
The Mustangs will host the conference tournament next year.
