Cal Poly tied with Hawaii 1-1 behind Emily Hansen’s header Oct. 22 at Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Mustangs’ (7-9-3, 2-4-1 Big West) draw with Hawaii (6-8-1,1-4-1 Big West) keeps them alive for the Big West Conference tournament. Cal Poly out-shot the Rainbow Warriors 20-15 and won the corner kick battle 5-2 as well. Sophomore forward Jessica Johnson led the team in shots with eight and sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown also notched three saves in the game.
Hawaii took the lead after a scoreless first half when senior forward Sonest Furtado broke through the Mustangs’ defense on a pass from junior midfielder Raisa Strom-Okimoto. Furtado passed the Cal Poly defenders and found the net, beating the keeper in the 58th minute.
The Mustangs found the equalizer in the 73rd minute when junior defender Chelsea Barry launched a free kick that senior midfielder Emily Hansen found and headed into the back of the net. It was Hansen’s first goal of the season.
After the score was tied 1-1 at the end of full time, the teams went through double overtime scoreless, resulting in a draw.
The tie brings the Mustangs’ point total to seven in the Big West Conference standings. To make the conference tournament, Cal Poly has to beat UC Santa Barbara and needs Cal State Fullerton to lose both of their remaining games. This also depends on a combination of results involving Hawaii, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside.
The Mustangs will continue the Blue-Green Rivalry on the road against UC Santa Barbara Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. in their last game of the regular season.
