The Cal Poly’s women’s soccer team won its first game in Big West play after Julie McKee scored in the 33rd minute against UC Riverside on Sunday. McKee collected a loose ball after a failed clearing attempt to put the Mustangs up 1-0 for good.
The Mustangs overcame an eight-shot deficit and 100 degree heat to improve their record to 6-5-1, dropping the Highlanders to 1-9-2.
UC Riverside nearly tied the game four minutes into the second half when Candis Novis got a ball past junior Brooke Gauvin, only to see it bounce off the left post. Gauvin’s seven saves helped her win her fifth game in nine starts.
The Mustangs play UC Irvine on Oct. 8 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium at 7 p.m.
