Four Cal Poly golfers carded scores in the 70s Monday as the Mustangs climbed from sixth into fourth place following the second round of play in the 2010 Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship held at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Defending Big West individual champion Stephanie Yocum rebounded from Sunday’s 85 with a 76 Monday, while Julia Puscheck carded a 77 and Alicia Weber and Maddy Fletcher both had 78s. Coach Scott Cartwright’s Mustangs posted a four-person 309 total round.
UC Davis opened up a 14-stroke lead over Long Beach State heading into Tuesday’s final round. The Aggies carded a 299 Monday for a 597 total, while Long Beach State (611) is just one stroke ahead of UC Irvine (612). Cal Poly has a 36-hole 633 total.
Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside share fifth place with 638 totals and Cal State Fullerton, fielding a golf team for the first time this season, is at 663.
The individual leader after 36 holes is Chelsea Stelzmiller of UC Davis. On Monday she posted the only even-par round on the 6,034-yard course. Stelzmiller, a two-time Big West runner-up, carded three birdies and three bogeys for her 72 and is one stroke ahead of Reina Rogers of Long Beach State and Amy Simanton of UC Davis.
In her round of 73, Rogers recorded three birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and eagled the 476-yard par-five 10th hole. Simanton notched three birdies and five bogeys en route to her 74.
Alice Kim of UC Davis, the first-round leader with a 72 Sunday, bogeyed the final four holes Monday to fall into fourth place.
Another eagle was carded Monday by Alica Chavez of Cal State Fullerton on the 354-yard, par-4 13th hole.
Cal Poly’s Weber is tied for 14th place entering Tuesday’s final round while Fletcher is tied for 16th place. Puscheck is tied for 18th place while Yocum, who carded three birdies and five bogeys Monday, is in 23rd place with a 17-over-par 161 total. She won last year’s Big West finals with a nine-over-par 225 total.
Kirsten Locke, Cal Poly’s fifth golfer in the tournament, carded an 89 Monday and is in 35th place with her 176 total.
While the weather has been pleasant with light winds and temperatures in the 70s, Tuesday’s final round may be affected by rain, wind and temperatures forecast in the low 60s.
As a result, UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton will start from the 10th tee at 8 a.m., with Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge tee off at 8 a.m. from the first tee and the top three teams in the standings (UC Davis, Long Beach State and UC Irvine) tee off at 8:40 a.m. from the first tee.
