Despite a strong effort and major contributions from key members, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team fell for the first time in conference play with a road loss to Cal State Northridge, 81-76.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 2-1 in Big West play and 8-8 overall, while the Matadors improved to 2-1 in conference games and 6-11 overall.
Four Cal Poly players scored in double figures, led by senior Molly Schlemer who notched a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Jonae Ervin also tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Ariana Elegado added 20 points while fellow junior Taryn Garza recorded a career-high 15 points.
For the Matadors, Ashlee Guay led the way with 22 points while Cinnamon Lister added 20 points of her own.
Cal Poly had the advantage in terms of field goal percentage and three-point shooting, shooting 41 percent from the floor and making six of 17 from long range, compared to Cal State Northridge’s 40 percent from the floor and six of 20 from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs committed 14 turnovers to the Matadors’ 12 in a game that featured 14 lead changes and 4 ties.
