Why is 'number whatever' anonymous?

It is ironic that “number whatever,” the Mustang Daily guest columnist, wishes to remain anonymous (“The story of a number reduced to zero”). Perhaps I missed the point of his/her guest commentary, but I thought s/he was bemoaning his/her apparent expendability within the CSU system. Putting a name in the place of a number would seem a logical, bold, indeed empowering next step towards reaffirming his/her pride of service to country and heartless system.
