An ordinance aimed at discouraging partying during the first weeks of school will double fines for certain violations from Sept. 14-29.
Open containers, noise violation, possession of a deadly and dangerous weapon, unruly gatherings, urination in public and hosting a party with underage drinking are the infractions the fines are doubled for.
The fines are doubled under the Safety Enhancement Zone Ordinance, which was adopted by the San Luis Obispo City Council in August 2013.
“This Safety Enhancement Zone ordinance helps address the adverse behaviors that were becoming increasingly prevalent with the start of the Cal Poly fall quarter which created a significant threat to public health and safety,” according to a San Luis Obispo Police Department press release.
Safety Enhancement Zones are also in place during Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras.
