Women victorious in season’s first overtime opportunity
Backed by Elise Krieghoff’s 106th-minute goal, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team squeaked out a double-overtime victory at Hawaii Sunday evening.
The Mustangs struck first as freshman Megan Abutin found the net in the 34th minute. Two minutes after halftime, the freshman sent a header into the right corner of the net, putting Cal Poly up 2-0. After Tiana Fujimoto put Hawaii on the board in the 54th minute, the Rainbow Wahine tied things up with 1:19 left in regulation.
Krieghoff’s game-winning strike moved her past Kolleen Kassis for the school record for single-season goals. The sophomore forward remains the nation’s leader in goals with 16 on the season.
Cal Poly (7-7, 3-1 Big West Conference) is now locked in a three-way first place tie with UC Irvine (8-5-0, 3-1-0) and UC Riverside (6-8-1, 3-1-0) atop the Big West.
The Mustangs host UC Riverside at 12 p.m. this Sunday following a Friday evening match with Cal State Fullerton at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Men winless in weekend roadtrip
The Cal Poly men’s soccer team lost both its Big West Conference games this weekend, falling 2-0 to UC Irvine on Friday and 3-1 to No. 4 Cal State Northridge Sunday.
The Mustangs, who rode a 7-3 nonconference record into their Big West schedule, have hit a bit of a cold streak.
Now 1-3 in the Big West, Cal Poly only mustered one goal this weekend, with sophomore forward Matt LaGrassa scoring at Cal State Northridge.
Though Cal Poly outshot the Matadors 14-13, Cal State Northridge ultimately took control of the game. UC Irvine wasted no time in shutting out Cal Poly on Friday, as the Anteaters scored within six minutes of the start and never looked back.
The Mustangs look to rebound next weekend as they hit the road again and face Big West northern division opponent Sacramento State on Saturday.
