The Cal Poly women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an 83-72 win at UC Riverside on Saturday.
Senior center Molly Schlemer led the way for the Mustangs as she scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds in 40 minutes of play. Junior guard Ariana Elegado added 18 points, while sophomore guard Beth Balbierz pitched in with 10 points off the bench.
The Mustangs shot 43 percent from the floor, compared to UC Riverside’s 36 percent for the game.
With the win, Cal Poly (15-11, 9-4 Big West) moved into a first-place tie with Cal State Northridge in the conference standings.
Softball goes 3-3 at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
The Cal Poly softball team split its six games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. this past weekend.
The tournament was highlighted by freshman right-hander Sierra Hyland’s no-hitter in Saturday’s game against Maryland where she struck out 12 Terrapins hitters. Hyland walked five batters but only allowed one Maryland player past second base.
She became the first Cal Poly player to record a no-hitter since Anna Cahn did so against Utah State in 2009.
The Mustangs also defeated Fordham and New Mexico, but dropped matchups to Texas, Syracuse and UNLV in the tourney.
Swimming and diving finishes sixth at conference championships
The Cal Poly women’s swimming and diving teams finished in sixth place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships this past week.
UC Davis won the team title with 712.5 points, while the Mustangs finished with 317.5 points in the competition that unfolded over the course of four days at two different sites in Southern California.
The 400-free relay team, consisting of seniors Rachel Cleak, Jill Jones, Kelsey Engel and freshman Karoline Eckhart, finished sixth in 3 minutes, 25.92 seconds, which was just 33-hundredths off the all-time school record.
