The Cal Poly volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak as the Mustangs swept UC Davis in straight sets in Davis on Saturday. With the win, the Mustangs move up to the sixth place in the Big West Conference with a 5-7 record in league play and to 11-14 overall.
The Mustangs out-hit the Aggies with a .230 hitting percentage to UC Davis’ .163 and finished the match with 70 digs and five aces to the Aggies’ 65 digs and three aces.
The Mustangs took the first set 30-28 after a back-and-forth battle carried the teams well beyond the standard 25-point finish. The Mustangs held the lead for the majority of the game until the Aggies managed to tie the score 21-21. The teams exchanged points from there, but a kill by outside hitter Megan McConnell, who had 15 for the night, put the set away.
During the second set, the Mustangs were able to secure the lead early on with kills by McConnell and freshman middle blocker Taylor Gruenewald as the Mustangs took the set 25-19.
The Mustangs followed the second set with a similar third, as they secured the lead early on and carried it out to the finish. UC Davis put in a last minute effort with a 7-2 run that brought the Aggies within a point of Cal Poly, but the Mustangs answered with a 3-0 run to secure a 25-20 victory in the decisive victory.
The Mustangs return home for back-to-back Big West Conference matches Friday and Saturday nights against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton, respectively.
