On Saturday, March 7, Cal Poly will be hosting a candlelight vigil to honor those who have died due to violence toward religious minorities.
The vigil will be held in the University Union Plaza at 6:30 p.m.
As stated in a press release provided by event organizers, the recent murders of American Muslims in North Carolina, Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya and a Danish Jew in Copenhagen and other victims of violent attacks are bringing together people of a variety of religious traditions in San Luis Obispo.
Dr. Rushdi Abdul Cader, a local physician and member of the Mosque of Nasreen, believes communities should come together to speak against the violence.
“In a world of increasing violence against religious minorities, communities must unite around the common cause of promoting mutual support and preventing violence,” Dr. Cader is quoted as saying in the press release. “The message of this vigil is not just that Jewish, Christian or Muslim, Black, Brown or White lives matter, but simply that innocent lives matter!”
Organizations involved in organizing the vigil are the People of Faith for Justice, the Islamic Society of SLO County, the Muslim Student Association at Cal Poly and the Alliance with Law Enforcement for Reporting of Threats to the U.S.
The vigil will be open to the public, and candles will be provided.
