Two individuals were arrested Tuesday after a U.S. Highway 101 accident resulted in two officers chasing a driver into town before making the arrests near campus.
Two unmarked trucks and six marked police cars responded to the arrest on Foothill Boulevard near Casa Street, but traffic appeared to be moving normally.
Three eyewitnesses reported that at approximately 3 p.m., a woman in a green Ford Explorer with significant damage to the tires allegedly drove onto Foothill Boulevard with at least two cops in pursuit. Once on Foothill, the witnesses said a man in a BMW sedan allegedly drove between the Explorer and police cars following it.
According to witnesses, the woman then pulled over, as if she was going to surrender to the police, but allegedly attempted to enter the BMW. A police officer in an unmarked truck then drove to the scene and drew his gun, after which the arrests were made, witnesses said.
San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) Sgt. Brian Amoroso, who responded to the scene with SLOPD and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, confirmed the woman exited the freeway after being in an accident, but could not comment on the ongoing investigation.
Cuesta College freshman Blake Harrington watched events unfold from an apartment complex across Foothill Boulevard. The entire incident was “just weird,” he said.
“I still feel perfectly safe,” he said. “It’s just someone being an idiot.”
A CHP spokesperson said the agency could not comment on the investigation until the officers returned and were able to file a report.
