Rap artist Mac Miller will take over Avila Beach this Friday, Sept. 28. Fans are looking forward to an evening concert on the beach with the headlining artist along with Travis Porter and YG.
Collective Efforts Events is putting on this event as an official back-to-school beach party, according to company owner and partner Tyrone Galgano.
“We want to give (college students) something to get everyone that they’ve met in the first couple weeks of school together for a concert,” Galgano said. “This is the biggest hip-hop concert we’ve ever done on the beach.”
College students, high school students and community members of all ages are expected to show up to the concert. The main demographic will be college students, though, because it’s rare to have this kind of music at Avila Beach with such a hit performer, Galgano said.
“There’s a really high demand for these shows,” Galgano said. “What’s nice is that our biggest demographic is our college students, and we’ll definitely get to the sell-out point. We’ve already sold over 2,000 tickets for the event.”
It’s no surprise that tickets are selling so quickly, considering how popular Mac Miller’s beats are with college-age students, according to history sophomore Daniel Michaels.
“I really like his music,” Michaels said. “He brings a different vibe and definitely expresses himself. It’s not the typical ‘bitches and hoes’ stuff that you hear with most rappers. His beats are really good. With rap and getting popular it really depends on how catchy your beats are.”
Students across Cal Poly and Cuesta College campuses are buzzing about the massive beach party that will inevitably accompany the concert.
“A lot of the guys in my fraternity are going and I hear them talking about it throughout the house all the time,” Michaels said. “It’s been promoted a lot, too. I would definitely go if I had thirty bucks to pay for a ticket.”
Even though the demographic will be mostly college students, the venue on the golf course usually makes for a relaxing feel, Galgano said.
“It’s definitely a nice place to listen to this concert,” Galgano said. “Just being out in Avila Beach sets a relaxed tone.”
Even students who don’t necessarily know much about the artist look forward to attending, according to sociology junior Katie Maloney.
“I’d go just because the Avila venue is really fun and it’s so beautiful,” Maloney said. “But I literally don’t listen to him. Is he a rapper? Who is he?”
Most people have heard at least a couple of Mac Miller’s mainstream songs, though, according to Michaels.
“‘Donald Trump,’ “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza’ and ‘Party on Fifth Ave.’ are my three favorites,” Michaels said. “I really like ‘Donald Trump’ because it’s upbeat and really pumps you up. ‘Kool Aid (and Frozen Pizza)’ flows really well. And ‘Party on Fifth Ave,’ I really like the beats and the sample from DJ Kool. It’s fun to party to.”
The event begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, and opening acts will start at 6 p.m.
Tickets are available online at vallitix.com, Collective Effort Events’ website, in-store at Boo Boo Records, Cloud 9 Smoke Shop & Hookah Lounge and the Mid-State Fair Box Office in Paso Robles.
All ages are welcome.
