Lauren RabainoEight members of the Cal Poly track and field team won events in Los Angeles on Saturday in the Mustangs’ outdoor opener at the UCLA Invitational held at Drake Stadium.
Junior Julieann Dufresne won the shot put at 48 feet, 1 ¬ inches and the discus at 157 feet, surpassing the NCAA West Regional qualifying standard in each event.
Other Cal Poly West Regional qualifiers included senior Sharon Day, who cleared 6 feet, _ inches in the high jump and senior Christine Silva, who pole vaulted 12 feet, 9 « inches.
Altogether, the Mustangs won eight events.
Freshman Jasmine Pickett won the women’s 200 meters in 25.47 seconds and finished third in the long jump at 18 feet, 7 inches.
Sophomore Kevin Jones, who came in third place in the pole vault at 16 feet, _ inches, won the 110 high hurdles in 15.05, and fellow sophomore M.J. Robotham claimed the 400 hurdles in 57.26.
In the 3,000 steeplechase, sophomore Carl Dargitz won in 9 minutes, 8.65 seconds.
Second-place Mustangs included freshman Jerae Byrd in the 400 hurdles (65.22), freshman Champelle Brown in the 400 (56.53), junior Lauren Mulkey in the 1,500 (4:32) and senior Whitney DeWeese in the shot put (46 feet, ¬ inches).
Third-place finishers on behalf of Cal Poly included senior Cassie Atkinson in the 800 (2:13.12), freshman Whitney Sisler in the high jump (5 feet, 6 « inches), sophomore Jenna Homes in the pole vault (11 feet, 9 _ inches), sophomore Nicki Lopes in the javelin (133 feet, 3 inches), sophomore Joe Cozby in the 400 (48.98) and senior Joey Hauser in the triple jump (46 feet, 6 inches).
Cal Poly will next travel to Fresno State for a dual meet Saturday.
