The Cal Poly softball team, coming off a two-game losing streak after the Mustangs dropped the final two contests at rival UC Santa Barbara last weekend, will host UC Davis at Bob Janssen Field on Saturday and Sunday.
Cal Poly (21-14, 3-3 Big West) has had a turnaround year up to this point, as it has already surpassed last season’s win total (19) with 17 regular season games still to be played.
Freshman pitching phenom Sierra Hyland leads the way on offense and from the circle, as she has a team-leading 25 RBIs and ranks No. 6 in the nation with 196 strikeouts on the season.
Emily Ceccacci leads the Mustangs with a .387 batting average and 46 hits for the season.
Meanwhile, UC Davis (12-24, 1-5) enters the weekend games struggling in Big West play.
The Mustangs and Aggies will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 4 p.m., with the series finale on Sunday at noon.
Women’s golf hosts Big West championships
The Cal Poly women’s golf team will host the 2014 Big West Women’s Golf Championship at San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club from Sunday through Monday.
The tournament will feature 18 holes played each day, for a total of 54 holes to decide the conference champion.
Cal Poly wrapped up its final match before the championships with a seventh place finish in the Gold Rush on Tuesday. Senior Taylor Yoshitake finished in a tie for 11th with a final-round 77.
Men’s and women’s tennis host conference matches
Both the Cal Poly men’s and women’s tennis teams will be at home this weekend, with the men taking on UC Davis and the women facing UC Santa Barbara at Mustang Courts.
The men will look to snap a four-match losing skid dating back to March 24 — most recently, the Mustangs lost 4-3 to San Francisco on Monday and 4-2 to Stanford on Tuesday.
The winner of Saturday’s 11 a.m. Big West matchup will break a third-place tie in the standings.
The women’s team (4-9, 1-5 Big West) is coming off its first Big West victory of 2014 with a sweep of UC Riverside this past Sunday, and will take on the Gauchos starting at 2 p.m.
