Former Santa Barbara City College head coach Teddy Warrecker is leaving his position at Santa Barbara City College to become an assistant coach at Cal Poly.
“It’s been a dream of mine to coach at the Division-I level,” Warrecker said in a release. “I’ve known for at least five years that’s where I wanted to be. Coach (Larry) Lee approached me about the job and it really came out of left field.”
Teddy Warracker has been coaching at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) since 2001. In his tenure, SBCC compiled a 193-198-2 record, six winning seasons, three regional playoff appearances, a Western State Conference championship in 2007 and three Southern California Regional appearances.
Before him, the team had tallied 19 straight losing seasons.
In 2007, Warracker led SBCC to a school-best record of 34-10 — winning its first Western State Conference North title in 29 years. Over the last four years, the Vaqueros have gone 102-65 (.611).
In 2010, SBCC went 20-16 en route to breaking school records for homers (56) and Western State Conference batting average (.331). First baseman Conner Rehage belted 13 homers and catcher/outfielder Tommy White held the second-highest batting average in school history (.424).
On the mound, UC Santa Barbara-bound Zach Edgington was named Western State Conference North co-Pitcher of the Year. He went (6-3) with a 2.92 ERA with 101 strikeouts — ranked second in the state.
“I can remember my first day on the job as clear as yesterday and I can’t believe that 10 seasons have gone by in a flash. It was such a great opportunity to learn from the head coaching position. There wasn’t much here when I started and we’ve really put the program on the map and moved a lot of guys on (to four-year schools),” Warrecker said in the release. “SBCC will be a part of me forever. It’s been my heart and soul. I wish I could have seen the program go where I still think it can go. It can go way beyond what it is right now.”
