The Cal Poly softball team opened Big West conference play Friday afternoon with a 10-0 defeat at the hands of UC-Riverside. The Highlanders pounded out 16 hits which tied the most hits for an opponent against Cal Poly in program history.

Irvine rallies past Mustangs in overtime

UC Irvine rallied from an eight point deficit in the final 48 seconds to force overtime against Cal Poly. Junior Darren Moore hit a three-point shot with 0.9 seconds in regulation to tie it and Irvine outscored the Mustangs 17-10 in overtime to get the win. The loss means the Mustangs will be the sixth seed in the upcoming Big West conference tournament beginning on Wednesday.
