Students are defaulted into a $2 fee, but they can choose to opt out by April 18.
The Student Involvement Representation Fee (SIRF) is a voluntary fee that is implemented during fall and spring quarter. SIRF was approved on Jan. 28, 2015 by the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees.
“I think anything that is a fee needs to be talked about in open dialogue,” ASI President and agricultural business senior Schwaegerle said. “Students need to know, especially with this one, that this a voluntary fee that they have been defaulted into and they have the opportunity to opt out of it.”
Last fall, 1,266 students opted out. Additionally, the fee was reversed for 898 students because they did not pay their registration and tuition fees by the term’s census date on Oct. 9.
SIRF provides funding for the California State Student Association (CSSA). The CSSA is an independent nonprofit organization composed of elected student leaders from all 23 CSU campuses. Students who pay the fee will be funding the activities of the CSSA to participate in the state legislature.
To opt out of the fee, students can log into their MyCalPoly portal and access the Student Center. Then, scroll to “Finances” and the “other financial” drop-down option, which leads to “account activity.” An opt-out icon will be on the right of the $2 charge titled, “Student Rep fee SIRF.”
