This quarter has gotten off to a great start, especially with all of the anticipation surrounding the opening of the Recreation Center.
Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) was happy with the opening and has been receiving positive feedback from all campus constituencies. The sand volleyball courts and leisure pool also opened this week following the official opening, and students have definitely been taking advantage of the warm weather in San Luis Obispo, despite the winter months.
ASI is also excited that we have more than 45 free classes available each week. The Climbing Park, which includes a bouldering rock and an even larger freestanding rock wall, is coming soon. This will be a great final addition to our new state-of-the-art facility. Everyone at ASI hopes you are utilizing all that the Recreation Center has to offer.
The start of this quarter also introduced the first of many open forums about the Student Success Fee. These forums are intended to educate students on what is happening with California’s support of higher education and how the trends will affect Cal Poly specifically.
This is a critical time for Cal Poly that must be taken very seriously. Every student will get an opportunity to vote on the fee. The goal of the forums is purely educational. This is a great chance for every student to address any concerns, clarify any confusion or debunk any rumors that might be manifesting around campus.
Thus far, I feel every student that has participated in one of the forums has left with a greater understanding of what this proposed fee is asking for and why.
ASI has also created a task force with the vision that every student will be educated and have objective information prior to placing their vote. We are working on various projects to make sure information about the fee is easily available.
If your organization or group would like to receive a presentation on the Student Success Fee, we can help set that up as well.
Please be proactive in seeking out information so that the student body’s voice can be represented on Feb. 29.
