Six players on the Cal Poly softball team are under suspension for violating team rules, softball coach Jenny Condon said Tuesday.
The coach is working with Athletics Director Don Oberhelman to handle the suspensions, though she hasn’t determined how long each player will be out for.
Condon declined to comment on why she suspended the players, but said the length of each player’s punishment will differ based on the severity of their violation.
“It’s a team issue,” she said. “And we’re going to handle it in-house. That’s what we do with all the kids who break rules in any way, shape or form.”
The team, which was ranked sixth in its conference in the league’s preseason coaching poll, will head to the Kajikawa Classic tournament in Tempe, Ariz. this weekend. Condon said none of the six suspended players will play in the tournament.
The official softball team roster lists 17 players, leaving just 11 who can play this weekend. Condon said players will most likely be at positions they’re not used to at the tournament because of the team’s limited numbers.
“We’ve got a really versatile group of student-athletes that are going to give us everything that they have,” she said. “Some of them will be learning skills they’re unfamiliar with.”
The softball team addressed player conduct and repercussions for breaking team rules at the beginning of the year, Condon said.
