National Engineers Week, more commonly known by engineering students as eWeek, brings various events put on by the different engineering student councils.
The Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers took the idea behind Food Network’s “Chopped,” adding a Cal Poly twist to it.
Instead of getting a bag full of cooking ingredients, participants received materials to create the next big invention that would benefit Cal Poly students.
David Garges, a graduate student who attended the event, took all the materials provided and got creative.
“We created a bike helmet that is beneficial to ride in the rain,” Garges said.
Participants were split up into teams and had thirty minutes to come up with a potential product, which they then pitched to a panel of judges.
Mechanical engineering senior Jenna Becker and her team built a model water filter that was awarded the top prize by the judges.
“I thought it would be really exciting to build something, get creative, try something new,” Becker said.
eWeek wraps up with a casino night from 6-10 p.m. Friday in the Advanced Technology Laboratories building (building 7).
