The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA) will ask the City of San Luis Obispo to consider allocating part of their funds for the 2017-2019 year to help raise money for a new building.
SLOMA will be present at the city’s open forum concerning the financial plan at the Ludwick Community Center on Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The museum is asking that anyone who supports the museum and San Luis Obispo’s art community to attend the forum wearing “bright, primary colors.”
At the forum, SLOMA will ask the city to consider allocating $500,000 over two years to add to the budget for a new 26,000 square foot building to replace the existing museum located in downtown San Luis Obispo. The proposed funds will add to the museum’s campaign to raise $15 million for the project.
SLOMA plans for the new building to include triple the exhibition space for viewing artwork, triple the number of art education classrooms and an art library for scholastic research, among other amenities.
The campaign includes asking for donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations, in addition to the City of San Luis Obispo.
The city holds the forum every two years to establish the community’s priorities for funding in San Luis Obispo. Past projects have included the Downtown Concept Plan and Mission Plaza Master Plan.
For those who cannot attend the forum, an online survey to express support for the new building can be found here.
