Emotional weekend lifts Mustangs

As soon as the Cal Poly football team’s Hall of Fame Game win Saturday over Southern Utah was over, Kenny Chicoine held up a small, white banner with Sharpie ink all over it.

The banner simply read, “1960.”

Displaying the banner to a jovial crowd celebrating the Mustangs’ 18-14 comeback win, Chicoine was paying homage in his own way to the 1960 Cal Poly football team, which had 16 players, a team manager and a team booster killed in a plane crash Oct.

A tribute to Division I-AA football took place in front of 8,168 spectators Saturday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

It wasn’t the great home crowd with roaring student sections, the gorgeous Mustang Memorial Field or even the moving ceremony at halftime.

Mustangs rally to win thriller, 18-14

With just under 13 minutes left in Saturday night’s Hall of Fame Game, the Cal Poly football team trailed Southern Utah 14-3 and appeared headed for a second straight loss.

Four turnovers and two Matt Brennan touchdown bombs later, the Mustangs somehow wound up 18-14 winners in front of 8,168 fans in the Great West Football Conference opener at Alex G.

Poly volleyball wins 3-2 at Long Beach St., starts 3-0 in Big West

The No. 20 Cal Poly volleyball team made program history in thrilling fashion Saturday evening, moving to 3-0 in Big West Conference play for the first time by virtue of a 30-20, 30-19, 20-30, 35-37, 17-15 win against Long Beach State at Walter Pyramid.

Cal Poly fought off two match points (14-12, 14-13) to tie the fifth set at 14-14 after a 49ers attack error and won the game, 17-15, on a block by Jaclyn Houston.

Mustang women's soccer comes up with huge road win

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team (6-4) snapped UC Davis’ six-game winning streak Friday afternoon, downing the Aggies 3-0 in Davis.

This is the first game this season that the Aggies (7-2) have been shutout.

Cal Poly freshman midfielder Morgan Miller scored her first goal of the season just 13 minuets, 56 seconds into the game when she tapped the ball over the goal line off of a pass from junior midfielder Erica Zumbahlen.

Poly women runners third, men fifth at invites

The Cal Poly women’s cross country team had a solid performance with a third place finish at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.

Freshman Kimberly Donatelli led the Cal Poly contingent with a 13th-place time of 14 minutes, 56 seconds on the 5K course.

She was followed by classmate Alyssa Daw in 14th in 14:56.

1960 Poly football team to receive honorary induction

The 1960 Cal Poly football team will receive an honorary induction into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame.

On Friday, Cal Poly will host two campus events honoring the team and the unique legacy it brings to the history of the university.

A late-afternoon private ceremony will be held dedicating Mustang Memorial Plaza, a 15,000-square-foot space honoring the 18 members of the Cal Poly family who lost their lives in the tragic Oct.

Noble to return for No. 5 Cal Poly; QBs up in air

After sitting out last week’s game at San Jose State with a sprained left ankle, Cal Poly sophomore tailback James Noble expects to play Saturday against visiting Southern Utah.

Noble has rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry, in three games.

Poly men's soccer team routs SJSU, 3-0

The Cal Poly men’s soccer team dominated San Jose State 3-0 Tuesday night at the Sports Complex to improve to 3-3-4 on the season.

The team is changing under first-year head coach Paul Holocher, who was head coach at UC Santa Cruz from 1999-2005. He left the Banana Slugs with an NCAA Division II Championship appearance in 2004 and a record of 109-24-7.

A not so hot summer

I am sure I am not alone when I say that was another summer that went by way too fast. School has now officially started and I am sure everyone is excited to get back to the 5-10 hours a week of studying that Cal Poly recommends. Or was it 25-35 hours?

How far away are we from Thanksgiving break, like two months, right? Fall quarter isn’t the quarter where we get all those Mondays off, is it?
