Great West looks to expand from 5 to at least 8 teams

The Great West Football Conference is looking into expanding to at least eight teams in order to secure an automatic bid to the Division I-AA playoffs, the Mustang Daily has learned.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Great West commissioner Ed Grom declined to name what schools the Great West has contacted about joining the football-only conference, in which Cal Poly is currently one of five I-AA teams.

Poly will win Big West

The men’s basketball team and I got off to a volatile start last year.

Maybe I had it coming after I made several frank assertions in my first column about the team: “The only thing the 2004-05 team had in common with the top 25 were the numbers two and five – 22 losses and five wins.

Mustangs back at No. 9 in I-AA poll

The Cal Poly football team fell three spots to No. 9 Monday in The Sports Network’s Division I-AA poll following a 10-9 loss Saturday at No. 2 Montana.

After losing two of their last three games, the Mustangs (6-3, 2-1 Great West Football Conference) likely must beat both No.

Baca leads Poly men's tennis team by example, winning ways

Matt Baca and his doubles partner Kyle Roybal beat two ranked teams, including Stanford’s No. 2-ranked squad, in the men’s semifinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in October.

“That was like the best feeling I’ve had in terms of tennis in a long time,” Baca said.

Poly in must-win situation after 10-9 loss at Montana

It happened so quickly, it was almost like the Montana football team’s game-winning drive Saturday didn’t last 16 plays.

But that drive, spanning 76 yards in 3 minutes, 52 seconds, culminated with Dan Carpenter’s 21-yard field goal with five seconds remaining.

It is impossible for anyone to say exactly how many players will get on the floor each game for the Cal Poly men’s basketball team this season.

But judging by Saturday’s performance, it looks as if the Mustangs will use a rotation of at least 10 players. Cal Poly had 10 play 12 or more minutes in its 82-55 exhibition rout of Division II Notre Dame de Namur of Belmont in front of 837 in Mott Gym.

Poly faces toughest I-AA test yet: No. 2 Montana

Roughly 1,400 miles away from San Luis Obispo resides Washington-Grizzly Stadium, a site with which the Cal Poly football team is quickly becoming familiar.

The Mustangs played at Montana twice last year, losing a regular-season contest 36-27 before winning 35-21 for their first Division I-AA postseason victory in school history.

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team will look to rebound from its first Big West Conference loss at the conference tournament, beginning today at Long Beach State.

Depth key for women's basketball team in 2006-07

The Cal Poly women’s basketball team returns its top three scorers from a year ago, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Mustangs will look the same this season.

In fact, Cal Poly might start as many as three of its six freshmen, head coach Faith Mimnaugh said Wednesday.

Trojans falling off horse?

Rain is usually a normal occurrence in Oregon, and even on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore., it still managed to pour.

On this day it wasn’t water falling from the sky, though. It was Oregon State’s students pouring onto the field to celebrate one of the biggest victories in school history.

Cal Poly men's basketball boast high expectations

Cal Poly’s men’s basketball team was recently picked fourth by the media and sixth by coaches in recent Big West Conference preseason polls.

Despite such humble rankings, the Mustangs have high expectations for the upcoming 2006-07 season.

Cal Poly finished with a 10-19 overall record while posting a 7-7 record in conference play last year.
