Mustangs edged on back-to-back days

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team endured an arduous past weekend – the Mustangs were defeated 4-3 by both Utah and Oregon.

“Both were good matches against competitive teams,” Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. “These are teams that will be in the NCAA Tournament.

Super somebodies

The Super Bowl is right around the corner. This is easily most men’s favorite day of the year.

If you’re a real fan, you’ve had this day marked on the calendar for months. No football fan would have envisioned this match-up, but that’s what always seems to make the Super Bowl so intriguing.

Mendes at the top of his class

For being the No. 1 wrestler in the country in his weight class, 141 pounds, Chad Mendes sure hasn’t let it go to his head. The Cal Poly senior from Hanford is modest about his accomplishments but proud he earned the top spot.

A break from 'the fans' game'

Which is worse than a defenseless NBA All-Star Game: an NFL Pro Bowl where nobody hits hard or an NHL All-Star Game that goes unwatched? Fan ballots.

Last Thursday, the starters for the NBA All-Star Game were announced, and the results were not congruent with this season’s statistics.

Mustangs topple Tigers in conference play

A poor free-throw percentage has plagued the Cal Poly men’s basketball team this season, but on Monday night, the Mustangs shot 92.9 percent from the line (26 of 28) en route to a 69-64 victory over Pacific.

In his fourth starting role at Cal Poly, sophomore guard Lorenzo Keeler dropped 15 points to lead the Mustangs to just their second win in 20 games at the Alex G.

Local prep star commits to Cal Poly

Logan Budd may be new to the Cal Poly football program, but it’s not so new to him.

The quarterback, defensive back and kicker from nearby Morro Bay High committed Sunday to play for Cal Poly on a partial-scholarship package, he said Monday.

Mustangs look to build on clutch performance

January was a tale of two streaks for the Cal Poly women’s basketball team. It was the best of times – a 4-0 start to Big West Conference play, their best conference start in 28 years. And it was the worst of times – a three-game losing skid including a loss to rival UC Santa Barbara and a one-point overtime defeat at Pacific.

Eye of the 'white tiger'

Who knew that Cal Poly was home to a white tiger? OK, maybe not a real white tiger, but ask any member of the Cal Poly swim team, “Where’s the white tiger?” and they’ll most likely point you in the direction of freshman swimmer Gloria Benefield.

When asked how she came to be known as “the white tiger,” she said, “I have this suit that’s blue and it’s got stripes like a tiger, and I’m really white – I don’t tan whatsoever – so a guy on the team named me ‘white tiger.

Don't mess with Megan

Since she was in third grade, Megan Harrison has played basketball.

“Basketball is my life and I don’t know what I’m going to do without it when I graduate,” she says.

Before moving to Dripping Springs, Texas, Harrison lived in Cambria with her family and played soccer because girls were not allowed to play on a basketball team until fifth grade.

Mendes stays unbeaten, Pami also wins

The Cal Poly wrestling team returned to action against UC Davis at Mott Gym on Friday night after a 12-day break. Ultimately, the Mustangs overcame the Aggies with a 28-15 win in the Pac-10 dual.

They won seven of the 10 matches, which included two forfeits by UC Davis.

Mustangs head to Stockton looking to build on second Big West win

Regardless of whether the Cal Poly men’s basketball team can make good on its bid to exercise some demons tonight, the whole country will get to see it.

As part of “Big Monday,” ESPN2 will nationally televise the Mustangs’ Big West Conference contest at Pacific at 8 p.
