Poly women's tennis team concludes six-week road trip

Sweeping Cal State Fullerton 7-0 Sunday was elating for the Cal Poly women’s tennis team a day after falling 5-2 to UC Irvine.

Against the Titans, the Mustangs doubles teams won all three matches, followed by an overwhelming shutdown in singles square-offs, which were all decided in two sets.

Cal Poly wins Lady Braveheart Challenge

Though the wind was blowing and conditions were not ideal, the Cal Poly women’s golf team finished on top Tuesday at the third annual Lady Braveheart Challenge at the Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont.

It was the ninth tournament victory for the women’s golf team since the program was launched eight years ago.

Mustangs feel sense of urgency heading to Thunderdome

Not many teams can say they have winning streaks in The Thunderdome.

In fact, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team is the only school in the Big West Conference to have won each of its last two games at UC Santa Barbara.

So the Mustangs have nothing to worry about when they tip off against the Gauchos at 2 p.

Matt Hanson truly a laker at heart

Matt Hanson stepped to the line Thursday night knowing full well he hadn’t made a free throw in a game for more than three weeks. There were only 1.4 seconds left, and if he could make one this time, his team would probably win.

As 1,676 people nervously looked on, Hanson went in his mind to his favorite fishing spot, Clubhouse Lake in his home state of Minnesota.

Rocket taking a huge risk

Rising temperatures and post-midterm laziness have made sitting through class especially difficult this week. On the way to class this morning, students are likely debating how important the upcoming lecture really is. Some might have taken the gamble and checked out for the beach.

Top football signing chose Cal Poly over Pac-10, SEC

Rich Ellerson didn’t want to single anyone out. The Cal Poly head football coach hesitated, shifted his weight and tried to pick his words carefully. But in the end, he couldn’t resist voicing the obvious: Quentin Greenlaw stands out.

“As heavily recruited as Quentin was, that meant a lot to us,” said Ellerson, asked if any one or two of the 16 signings the program announced Wednesday were particularly sought after.

Is this the year of LeBron?

With this weekend’s all-star game marking the halfway point of the NBA regular season, I wanted to reflect on how crazy it has been. For the first time since the ’80s, we have seen the Boston Celtics and the L.A. Lakers rise to dominance at the same time.

However, we have also seen a once-great franchise – the New York Knicks, due to a once-great player, Isiah Thomas – become the laughing stock of the NBA.

Titans hold off Mustangs

The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team’s coaching staff hung back, calm and collected, talking amongst themselves while their players were left alone to relax on the bench in the face of pressure. About 50 feet away, Cal Poly head coach Kevin Bromley time and again urgently invested himself into impassioned instruction at the center of a close-knit huddle trying to learn on the fly.

Mendes wins two more, stays unbeaten

Five senior Cal Poly wrestlers were honored Friday night prior to the Mustangs’ penultimate Pac-10 dual and final home dual of the season. One of them, Chad Mendes, said he had mixed emotions on Senior Night.

“It’s my last wrestling match ever in here and I went out with a good one,” he said.

Softball team stuns No. 2 Texas A&M

The Cal Poly softball team went 2-3 at the Cathedral City Kick Off in Palm Springs over the weekend, bookending its five outings with victories over No. 2 Texas A&M on Friday and New Mexico State on Sunday.

In the season-opening 5-1 win over the Aggies at Big League Dreams Sports Park, sophomore pitcher Helen Peña went the distance, allowing her only run in the last inning.
