The Cal Poly softball team won all three of its games over the weekend at its Mustang Classic at Bob Janssen Field, downing Cal and Santa Clara on Friday and then Alabama-Birmingham on Sunday. Because of rainy conditions, the Mustangs’ doubleheader on Saturday was cancelled.
Cal Poly football team to take on Wisconsin
Saving the best for last just took on a whole new meaning for the Cal Poly football program. The Mustangs will play at Big Ten Conference power Wisconsin in each team’s regular-season finale Nov. 22 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis., both schools announced Friday.
Baseball team erupts 22 runs in doubleheader
After falling 10-1 at Alabama in its season opener Friday night, the Cal Poly baseball team won 16-7 and 6-2 in a doubleheader Saturday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium to claim the series 2-1. In the second contest, in which the Mustangs compiled 15 hits, junior third baseman Brent Morel had three of them to go with three RBI.
Major League Soccer arrives at Cal Poly
Finally, the world’s most popular sport is gaining momentum in the United States, and now, in San Luis Obispo, as three Major League Soccer franchises will participate in the MLS Central Coast Showcase tonight through Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
“Right now in the community, Cal Poly athletics is the highest form of youth sports, so to have pro teams come in gives them a glimpse of a higher level,” said Cal Poly men’s soccer team assistant coach Brian Reed.
Matured Mustangs open season away
The Cal Poly baseball team returns older and wiser this season. In 2007, the Mustangs fielded an almost entirely new team, including four freshman position players and one freshman pitcher.
But this year is different.
“We’re quite a bit more experienced now,” Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee said.
Poly softball team hosts annual Mustang Classic
The Cal Poly softball team will host its annual Mustang Classic tournament this weekend in a round-robin format through which the Mustangs will welcome a quartet of teams.
“It’s always great to host the Mustang Classic tournament,” said Cal Poly head coach Jenny Condon.
Central Coast Roller Derby hosts first match of year

The lovely ladies of Central Coast Roller Derby host their season opener at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Skate Mor skating rink in Paso Robles. The match will be between The Heart Breakers and The Home Wreckers.
Cal Poly rugby club team takes on UC Santa Barbara tonight
The recreation field lights will blaze tonight, lighting the north side of campus as a long traditional rivalry ensues.
Trent Yackzan, a wing for the Cal Poly rugby club team, says the Mustangs couldn’t be more ecstatic to play UC Santa Barbara.
“We are excited to play under the lights,” Yackzan said.
Cal Poly women's tennis team takes two-week break from match play
Last weekend concluded in both a slim win and loss for the Cal Poly women’s tennis team. The Mustangs sealed a 4-3 victory at Loyola Marymount on Friday but lost 4-3 at Cal State Northridge the following day.
“We played pretty well in both (matches),” Cal Poly sophomore Steffi Wong said.
Mustangs lose for seventh time in nine games
The Cal Poly women’s basketball team battled all the way back into its Big West Conference game against UC Davis on Thursday night at Mott Gym. And then the Mustangs let it slip away, giving up an 11-0 run spanning the final four minutes and 18 seconds in a 53-47 loss.
