About a month ago, the Cal Poly men’s basketball team may have hit its low point. Not only did UC Riverside, then in last place at 1-7 in the Big West Conference, defeat the Mustangs 62-58, it was the first game Cal Poly played without senior guard Dawin Whiten, who had started 18 of its 19 games to that point.

After an impressive performance in a 3-1 win over Cal on Friday, when she hurled a complete-game three-hitter, Cal Poly freshman lefthander Anna Cahn was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Cahn also gave the Mustangs a two-run double in the win, in which the lone run allowed was unearned.

Things may have looked worrisome for the Cal Poly baseball team after dropping its season opener 10-1 at Alabama on Friday. The Mustangs stormed back in emphatic fashion, though, routing the Crimson Tide 16-7 and 6-2 a day later to sweep a doubleheader and take the series.

The Cal Poly men’s golf team took seventh of 10 teams at the two-day, 28th annual UC Irvine Anteater Invitational at the Santa Ana Country Club earlier this week.

Seniors Michael O’Brien and Bryan Pierce carded a 73 and a 74, respectively, in the final round of play on Tuesday, as the Mustangs finished with a four-person, 54-hole 904 total.

On Saturday, Cal Poly women’s swim team captain Stacey Sorensen swam in the last meet of the season – and of her college career – at the Big West Conference Championships.

Atlantic Division

Boston Celtics (A-): Over the summer, Danny Ainge must have sold his soul to the devil (aka Kevin McHale) in order to revitalize the Celtics and make them one of the NBA powerhouses.

Melissa Pura has always thought of herself as somewhat of a tomboy. Starting at 5 years old, she began to play baseball with boys until she was about 12, when her dad coaxed her into playing for softball clubs in her hometown of Salinas.

“I owe all of my success in softball to my dad,” Pura says.

More than 1,500 yearning fans heard the announcement they’d been waiting for: No. 1 vs. No. 2.

“At Oklahoma State, it was intense,” said John Azevedo, head coach of the Cal Poly wrestling team. “They make the announcement, ‘No. 1 and 2,’ and their fans are going wild.

There are a lot of opinions on why soccer is not popular in the United States. Some people say it’s because there’s not enough physical contact, that maybe it would be better with helmets and pads. But this weekend’s Major League Soccer Central Coast Showcase at Cal Poly just may have changed those people’s minds.
