About a month ago, the Cal Poly men’s basketball team may have hit its low point. Not only did UC Riverside, then in last place at 1-7 in the Big West Conference, defeat the Mustangs 62-58, it was the first game Cal Poly played without senior guard Dawin Whiten, who had started 18 of its 19 games to that point.
Cal Poly enters house of pain
Let me begin, I came to win, battle me that’s a sin Come on, throw your hands up If you’ve got the feeling, jump across the ceiling I’ll serve your ass like John McEnroe I’m the cream of the crop, I rise to the top Get used to one style and you know I might switch I came to get down (repeat) So get out your seats and jump around, Jump around (repeat to your heart’s content) I grace you with a few snippets from House of Pain’s “Jump Around” not because it’s great music (which it undoubtedly is), but rather because of the University of Wisconsin’s tradition to play the song during home football games between the third and fourth quarters while the crowd – you guessed it – jumps around.

After an impressive performance in a 3-1 win over Cal on Friday, when she hurled a complete-game three-hitter, Cal Poly freshman lefthander Anna Cahn was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Cahn also gave the Mustangs a two-run double in the win, in which the lone run allowed was unearned.

Struggling Mustangs still in Big West hunt
Despite the fact that the Cal Poly women’s basketball team has lost eight of 10 games, and will next play UC Riverside, which has won six straight, the Mustangs could still have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about their chances in the Big West Conference race.
Melissa Pura plays for the love of the game
Melissa Pura has always thought of herself as somewhat of a tomboy. Starting at 5 years old, she began to play baseball with boys until she was about 12, when her dad coaxed her into playing for softball clubs in her hometown of Salinas.
“I owe all of my success in softball to my dad,” Pura says.

Soccer splashes through Spanos Stadium
There are a lot of opinions on why soccer is not popular in the United States. Some people say it’s because there’s not enough physical contact, that maybe it would be better with helmets and pads. But this weekend’s Major League Soccer Central Coast Showcase at Cal Poly just may have changed those people’s minds.
