Men's golf wins fifth tournament championship

For the fifth time in school history, the Cal Poly men’s golf team won a tournament title, claiming UC Riverside’s Braveheart Classic on Tuesday. Four Mustangs finished in the top 20 for the victory at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont.

Junior Michael O’Brien came in third by carding a 70 in the final round to finish with a 221 total, just a stroke behind freshman Nick Paez and senior Spencer Paschall, both Highlanders.

Pami on way to national championships

To say that Chase Pami’s parents must be proud is a huge understatement.

Pami, a communications sophomore, is the No. 11 wrestler in the nation at 157 pounds and on Monday night, he became a Pac-10 Conference champion.

Pami earned a 3-1 overtime victory in Eugene, Ore.

Mustangs squander early leads to Gauchos

Though the Cal Poly baseball team outhit UC Santa Barbara 15-10 Tuesday afternoon, four of the 10 Gauchos hits left the park, causing the Mustangs to fall 10-8 despite an early advantage.

The non-conference game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, in which UC Santa Barbara overcame 2-1 and 5-2 deficits to top the Mustangs, marks the first Gauchos win in six meetings between the Central Coast rivals.

Jess of all trades, on the court and on the track

Track may not be her first love, but it’s definitely Jessica Eggleston’s current love.

The former basketball star has just begun her last and most promising season for the Cal Poly track and field team, and already has several first-place finishes under her belt.

Mustangs sweep doubleheader against North Dakota

Stellar pitching followed by an explosive hitting display carried the Cal Poly softball team to a doubleheader sweep of North Dakota on Monday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.

In the opener, a 3-0 win, Mustangs freshman southpaw Anna Cahn earned the win by giving up just one hit and one walk to the Fighting Sioux (4-6) while striking out five batters in six innings.

Cal Poly wrestlers make school history

Cal Poly wrestlers Chad Mendes and Chase Pami lived up to their top billings at the Pac-10 Conference Championships at the University of Oregon Monday. Both No. 1 seeds earned titles at their respective weight classes, making them the first Mustangs duo to each win Pac-10 championships in the same season.

Mustangs fail to balance conference record

The Cal Poly men’s basketball team failed to capitalize on an opportunity to reach .500 in conference play on Saturday night, falling to Pacific 68-47.

Trailing 31-29 at halftime, the Mustangs were outscored 37-18 in the second half. The loss, which was their 10th by double digits this season, guaranteed that Cal Poly can’t earn a top-four seed in the Big West Conference Tournament, and thus won’t have a first-round bye.

Women's tennis team sweeps doubleheader

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team controlled Mustang Courts on Saturday in a doubleheader, blasting UC Riverside 7-0 and then San Jose State 6-1.

“We came out strong and dominated,” said Cal Poly sophomore Brittany Blalock.

In No. 1 doubles against UC Riverside, Blalock and fellow sophomore Steffi Wong (21-15), ranked 36th in the country, defeated Erynne Oki and Angelique Corpuz 8-3.

Baseball takes one of four in San Diego

The Cal Poly baseball team went 1-3 at the University of San Diego Baseball Tournament over the weekend, returning home with just a Saturday win against No. 24 Fresno State.

In the Mustangs’ first contest, they fell 9-8 Thursday to No. 22 San Diego State in Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Mendes, Pami win in first two Pac-10 Championship rounds

Cal Poly’s two top seeds at the Pac-10 Conference Championships won their opening-round matches Sunday in front of 1,436 at Oregon’s McArthur Court. Mustangs senior Chad Mendes, No. 1 at 141 pounds, claimed a major decision over Cody Moulton of Oregon, 15-4, moving on to the championship semifinals, where he would defeat Boise State’s Levi Jones 16-4.
