Women's tennis wins fifth of six matches

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team won the third match of its seven-match home stand at Mustang Courts on Sunday, 5-2 over Pacific.

“I think we played really well today,” Mustangs head coach Hugh Bream said. “We came back very aggressively to win all three doubles matches.

Three Mustangs meet West Regional qualifications

Eight members of the Cal Poly track and field team won events in Los Angeles on Saturday in the Mustangs’ outdoor opener at the UCLA Invitational held at Drake Stadium.

Junior Julieann Dufresne won the shot put at 48 feet, 1 ¬ inches and the discus at 157 feet, surpassing the NCAA West Regional qualifying standard in each event.

Although the Cal Poly men’s basketball team’s fate as a sixth seed in the Big West Conference Tournament was already set heading into its regular-season finale at Cal State Northridge on Saturday night, it couldn’t have fared much worse in its final tune-up.

Baseball team takes series from Washington

The Cal Poly baseball team took two of three from Washington at Husky Stadium over the weekend. Sunday, sophomore righthander Steven Fischback (2-1) earned the win with six strong innings and eight strikeouts in a 12-1 flattening of the Huskies (5-6). The Mustangs (5-6) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth with a seven-run frame highlighted by two-run round-trippers by senior catcher Josh Thomas and sophomore leftfielder Luke Yoder, as well as a two-run single to left from junior outfielder Ryan Lee.

Day takes Olympic hopes to new heights

Most Cal Poly graduating seniors have jobs lined up, but few can say they have Olympic aspirations like Cal Poly senior phenom Sharon Day, who hopes to compete in the high jump in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

She’ll have to meet the Olympic “A” standard of 6 feet, 4 _ inches to qualify to compete in the Olympic trials, in which she would have to place in the top three to make Team USA.

Mustangs open week of home matches against Pacific

The two-week break between matches for the Cal Poly women’s tennis team must have come at just the right time for the Mustangs, who swept UC Riverside 7-0 and San Jose State 6-1 Saturday. They host Pacific at Mustang Courts at 11 a.m. Sunday.

“We had a chance to work on our fitness and get back in the weight room on a regular basis, which is hard to do when you’re on the road for a month,” said Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream.

Men's basketball team holds on for win at Long Beach State

In its next-to-last regular-season game, the Cal Poly men’s basketball team rallied down the stretch, outscoring Long Beach State 41-33 in the second half for a 68-62 win Thursday night. Sophomore guard Lorenzo Keeler made 7 of 17 shots from the floor, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range to lead the Mustangs (12-16, 7-8 Big West Conference) with a career-high 22 points.

Women's basketball team dominated in second half

With a first-round bye in the Big West Conference Tournament in its sights, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team closed its eyes. The Mustangs, who were outscored 48-26 in the second half of a 78-62 loss to Long Beach State before 211 at Mott Gym on Thursday night, fell below .

Kristina Santiago ahead of the curve

Kristina Santiago has been called “T” since she was a child, a nickname her parents gave her. Since then, she’s emerged as a formidable force on the basketball court, and is now a freshman forward for the Cal Poly women’s basketball team.

The 6-foot-2, Santa Maria native began playing pick-up games at Cal Poly when she was still in high school, and her familiarity with Cal Poly and her teammates has allowed for a smoother transition from high school to college basketball.
