The 5-foot-5 Silva won the UCLA Invitational on March 8 with a clearance of 12 feet, 9 « inches – an improvement from her 12-8 ¬ mark at the Husky Invitational in Seattle on Feb.

Mustangs close to announcing schedule

Since announcing Feb. 22 a game at Wisconsin scheduled for Nov. 22, the Cal Poly football program has struggled to fill out a desired 12-game slate for the upcoming season. After a lengthy, unsuccessful search for a final opponent that failed to make that calendar a reality, though, an 11-game schedule will likely be announced soon, Cal Poly athletic director Alison Cone said Tuesday.

Poly could host state football championships

Cal Poly is now among five candidates being seriously considered to host five high school football state championship games over a weekend in December, a California Interscholastic Federation official said Tuesday. On-campus Alex G. Spanos Stadium would serve as the San Luis Obispo venue for the 2008 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games, and is one of seven sites still officially being evaluated.

Mustangs tie for second place in Santa Barbara

Four days after winning its second tournament title in a row, and its sixth in school history, the Cal Poly men’s golf team finished tied for second among 12 teams at the UC Santa Barbara-hosted OGIO-Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

The Mustangs carded an 875 total at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara to tie with Boise State, 20 strokes behind Cal State Northridge, which led from start to finish.

Ski and snowboarding team rides on

The unofficial Cal Poly ski and snowboarding team is faring well in this season’s Southern California Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Conference competitions, despite a lack of funding from the university.

“We’re getting more recognition,” said team member and materials engineering junior Stefen Grandi.

Dufresne a discus dynamo

The shot putter and discus thrower for the Cal Poly track and field team has given her competition reason to fear her this season, and is focusing on sending the discus more than 175 feet and the shot beyond 50.

Top-40 duo a hit on tennis court

The end of last season brought together an enterprising doubles tandem that remains a force for the Cal Poly women’s tennis team.

Sophomores Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong, the Mustangs’ No. 1 doubles team, was ranked 38th in the country in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and now stands at 17-6 overall and 8-3 in dual action this season.

Freshman sensation helps Poly advance

The 6-foot-2 freshman took the floor as a center in her eighth start of the season Wednesday afternoon and led the Cal Poly women’s basketball team to a 76-61 win over UC Irvine at the Anaheim Convention Center in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament.

Cal Poly Water Ski Club to host 2009 NCWSA Championship

The Cal Poly Water Ski Club was recently awarded the host site for the 2009 National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA) National Championship, giving the reborn program further recognition in the national collegiate water ski arena.

“This is an excellent opportunity for us to continue to prove to the water ski community that we have what it takes to perform on a national level, both behind a boat as well as on the shore running an event,” club president Kyle Desautels said in a statement.

Disastrous first inning dooms Mustangs

A six-run first inning was too much to overcome for the Cal Poly baseball team in its 8-5 loss to Santa Clara on Wednesday night at Baggett Stadium. Cal Poly senior starter Grant Theophilus gave up two home runs and four hits in the first inning, as the Mustangs fell behind by six runs before they even had an at-bat.

Men's basketball can't buy a shot in season-ending loss

Four wins in four days were needed by the Cal Poly men’s basketball team to win the Big West Conference Tournament, but it was a mere four shots the Mustangs were able to make in the first half of their opening-round, season-ending, 62-54 loss to UC Riverside.
