Last year’s NBA Cinderella story was the eighth-seeded Golden State Warriors upsetting the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs. However, this year’s fairytale rules have changed, and Cinderella missed the ball.

Softball: Cahn shuts out Matadors

All Anna Cahn had to do Sunday was remain patient. Cahn, a freshman left-hander for the Cal Poly softball team, got all of her run support in the sixth inning of a 5-0, series-clinching win over Cal State Northridge at Bob Janssen Field. In her first collegiate shutout, Cahn (6-11) struck out five and scattered four hits in a complete game.

Fischback lifts Poly to series win in Davis

On the strength of a complete-game seven-hitter by sophomore right-hander Steven Fischback, the Cal Poly baseball team edged UC Davis 4-2 at Dobbins Stadium on Sunday to take the Big West Conference series 2-1.

In his first complete outing at the collegiate level, Fischback (4-3) struck out three and walked just one, as 67 of his 107 pitches were strikes.

No singles matches went beyond two sets as the Cal Poly women’s tennis team dominated Cal State Bakersfield 7-0 at Mustang Courts on Wednesday.

Amy Markhoff and Diane Filip slid to the No. 2 doubles spot and stayed unbeaten by routing Sara Mijwel and Ashlee Thorneycroft 8-1.

Mustangs get 16 hits, win for fifth time in six games

Thanks to some hot bats and a couple of stellar performances out of the bullpen, the Cal Poly baseball team picked up its third-straight win Tuesday night, defeating Fresno State 10-7 at Baggett Stadium, bringing their record to 14-18 on the season.

Sophomore shortstop Kyle Smith led the Mustangs’ offensive charge, producing his first career four-hit game, with three singles and a double.
