It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. In the ninth inning of Sunday afternoon’s rubber game, the Cal Poly baseball team held a 3-0 lead over UC Santa Barbara with one out and nobody on base. Nearly everyone from the 1,324 in attendance to the players at Baggett Stadium wanted to chalk up the win and go home.
Softball: Peña shuts out Pacific
Helen Peña pitched the third two-hitter of her career Sunday afternoon while leading the Cal Poly softball team to a 3-0 win over Pacific at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton.
Peña (8-6) struck out seven Tigers while walking none as the Mustangs kept within a game of UC Santa Barbara for second place in the Big West Conference.
Ohio track tandem teams up at Poly
Two Cal Poly track and field freshmen, Jerae Byrd and Jasmine Pickett, have more than the first letter of their names in common. Both hail from Ohio – 2,341 miles away from the sunny landscapes of San Luis Obispo.
How did two Ohioans end up so far from home?
Both excelled in their respective premier events (hurdles for Byrd and jumps for Pickett) and, although the athletes grew up in separate towns, over the summer they shared the same coach, whose daughter attended Cal Poly.
Cal Poly opens eight-game homestand
After starting the season 9-17, the Cal Poly baseball team was left with plenty of questions about its defense. The Mustangs, who have since won eight of 11, found answers in the return of sophomore shortstop Kyle Smith from injury and vastly improved performances out of the bullpen, Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee said.
Tre'dale Tolver: Switching lanes
Tre’dale Tolver has been used to hearing “ooohs” and “ahhhs” since he was young.
He used to draw them in a fashion perhaps unexpected of someone who’s become the best sprinter on Cal Poly’s campus.
“I’m retired thus far,” Tolver says of his days performing magic tricks.

Wagner earns All-Big West Second Team selection
Brycen Wagner has the most interesting picture on GoPoly.com. Not a typical golfer with pleated plaid pants and a polo shirt, he looks like he jumped straight out of the late 1970s with golf clubs in hand. If he had theme music following him during tournaments, it would most likely be classic rock.
Women's golf team finishes fourth
In matching its best-ever performance at the Big West Conference Championships, the Cal Poly women’s golf team finished fourth amongst six teams Tuesday at the Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Mission Viejo.
The Mustangs, who also came in fourth in 2001 and 2006, shot a four-person 319 total in the final round to finish with a 77-over-par 941 total.
Mustangs lose lead, fall at Cal
After getting out to a 7-1 lead in Berkeley on Tuesday afternoon, the Cal Poly baseball team surrendered its lead to fall 10-8 to No. 7 Cal at Evans Diamond.
The Golden Bears jumpstarted their rally by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Michael Capbarat and a single by Charlie Cutler.
Yocum, Mustangs in third place at Big West Championships
A vital asset to the Cal Poly women’s golf team, Stephanie Yocum was named the Big West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month in February.
The communications sophomore, who has been playing for eight years, was raised in what she calls a “golf family.” Her dad is an avid golfer, and she inevitably became interested in the game when her older sister started playing.
