Mustangs win finale but miss out on playoffs

Sarah Iwata and Robyn Kontra went out in style.

The two seniors led the Cal Poly softball team to a 5-2 victory over UC Riverside during its Senior Day and season finale Saturday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.

Iwata drove in the pivotal runs to put the Mustangs ahead, and Kontra scattered just five hits in a complete-game effort.

Cal Poly uses six pitchers in loss

Despite hitting three home runs to rally from a 7-2 deficit and tie the game, the Cal Poly baseball team failed to capitalize Sunday afternoon at No. 12 Cal State Fullerton’s Goodwin Field, dropping the conclusion of a Big West Conference series 12-9.

Although the Mustangs compiled 15 hits, they committed a season-high five errors resulting in six unearned runs.

A seven-year run as U.S. Lacrosse Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates national champions came to an end Saturday for the Cal Poly women’s lacrosse club team, which lost the WDIA National Championship at Invesco Field in Denver to Colorado State, 8-5 in overtime.
