Big West has new king: Fullerton's Bobby Brown

It wasn’t the way Bobby Brown had envisioned things.

Several months prior, the Cal State Fullerton guard was flirting with the NBA, working out with the Phoenix Suns (twice), the Clippers and Lakers of his hometown Los Angeles and attending the pre-draft camp in Orlando.

Roller hockey club prepares for tryouts

The Cal Poly roller hockey club team may not have the most visible fan base or an on-campus rink – but that doesn’t keep its members from doing what they love, and doing it well.

Last year, the Mustangs went 10-5-3 before falling in March at the Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League Regional Championships at the Roller Hockey Center in Irvine.

Mustangs to feel effects of Fresno State's run

While about a month has passed since the Fresno State baseball team won the College World Series championship, effects of the nationally celebrated run could just be beginning to be felt on the West Coast – including at Cal Poly.

Indeed, even Congressman Devin Nunes, a Fresno Republican who on July 15 announced the passage of a House resolution he introduced to honor the freshly crowned Bulldogs – is a Cal Poly graduate.

Church aims to send Day family to Beijing

Sharon Day is preparing to fulfill a lifelong dream of competing in the women’s high jump at the Olympics.

Meanwhile, a non-profit organization in her hometown is trying to ensure the former Cal Poly standout doesn’t live her dream alone.

Palm Harvest Church of Costa Mesa has been collecting tax-deductible donations in order to provide Day’s family with the means to travel to Beijing and see her compete.

Cal Poly announces volleyball schedule

Cal Poly announced Thursday its volleyball schedule for the upcoming season.

The 28-match slate will pit the two-time defending Big West Conference champion Mustangs against 11 other teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season.

They’ll host the cream of that crop – 2006 national champion Nebraska and 2007 runner-up Stanford – at Mott Gym on Sept.

They wouldn’t put things at risk. They wouldn’t tinker.

And they likely wouldn’t, in the eyes of many, jeopardize their chances by giving in to an entirely separate competitive urge to play another sport.

Biking festival races back to San Luis Obispo

More than 400 racers will compete in a once-national bike race in San Luis Obispo on Sunday.

The San Luis Obispo Downtown Criterium Classic and Cycling Festival returns to San Luis Obispo for its third consecutive year after falling into oblivion since 2001.

Great West to stay at five football teams

Contrary to a report suggesting that Utah Valley could soon add football, the new Great West Conference member is unlikely to join Cal Poly in the sport in the near future, school officials said Tuesday.

“It was probably exaggerated a little bit,” Utah Valley athletics director Michael Jacobsen said of the Friday report by The Salt Lake Tribune’s Maggie Thach.

Cal Poly refrains from issuing online policies for athletes

With the rise of social networking Web sites like Facebook and MySpace, all it takes is one incriminating photo for a student athlete to potentially lose a scholarship or be kicked off a team. And it’s not just hypothetical. There are numerous examples of athletes being punished for pictures or words published on the Internet, depicting misdeeds ranging from hazing to underage drinking.

Great West expansion to be announced

An all-sports division under the larger umbrella of Cal Poly’s Great West Football Conference will likely be announced today, according to conference and school officials.

South Dakota – reportedly one of 11 independent schools GWFC commissioner Ed Grom previously told the Mustang Daily the conference has discussed the division with – has announced a 1 p.
