Women's soccer team shut out in Tucson

Two days after falling in its season opener at home, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team gave someone else a more joyous home opener. The Mustangs were shut out 1-0 Sunday night at Arizona, dropping to 0-2 on the young season.

Wildcats sophomore midfielder Karina Camacho tallied the contest’s only score in the 35th minute, from 18 yards out on a pass from junior midfielder Jacqueline Broussard.

Women's soccer looks to fresh faces to climb Big West ladder

Although the Cal Poly women’s soccer team will have to make up for the losses of several departed stars from last year, those absences haven’t dimmed the Mustangs’ hopes heading into this season.

“Of course losing seniors is always hard, but we had a strong team in the past, and we have integrated a lot of people,” senior defender Cara O’Hagan said.

Cal Poly weighs move to FBS

The Cal Poly football team will take a step up in competition this year when it plays two Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. But don’t expect the Mustangs to move up to the FBS permanently – at least not yet.

Responding to a recent comment Fresno State head coach Pat Hill made to the Fresno Bee suggesting Cal Poly would eventually belong to the Western Athletic Conference, Cal Poly athletic director Alison Cone said such a move is unlikely to take place in the near future.

Elite transfer joins Mustangs cross country

The Cal Poly men’s and women’s cross country teams have been eagerly preparing this summer in anticipation of their first race this season.

The men’s side figures to come back strong, having lost only two seniors from last season’s squad that finished 11th at the NCAA Championships (outdoing a national ranking of 22 entering the race).

Cal Poly grad wins school's first gold medal

Cal Poly graduate Stephanie Brown Trafton won the gold medal in the women’s discus Monday night at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

She became the first gold medalist from Cal Poly after posting a mark of 212 feet, 5 inches.

“Someone told me that I was coming to the Bird’s Nest to lay a golden egg,” she told reporters.

Incoming Cal Poly basketball player arrested

An 18-year-old Minnesotan on the Cal Poly men’s basketball roster is being held without bail in connection with an armed robbery of a bank in Wisconsin. Anthony Di Loreto, hailed as a “top” recruit by Cal Poly when he signed with the school last November, was arrested Saturday in his hometown of Minnetonka, Minn.

Mustangs open preseason practices

After waiting all spring to get back out on the field and compete, the Cal Poly football team finally got its wish Wednesday.

The Mustangs returned to the field for the first time since they played their annual spring game in early April.

“It feels good getting back on the field, seeing all the guys again,” said senior running back James Noble.

Cal Poly alumna Gina Miles can thank the flu and a chance meeting for giving her a shot at representing the U.S. equestrian team in this year’s Olympics.

Miles, 34, who graduated in 1997 with a degree in crop science and a minor in agricultural business, met her horse, McKinlaigh, when his co-owners (Laura Coats and her husband Thom Schulz) brought the Irish sport horse to Creston from Ireland.

Van Ostrand to represent Canada at Olympics

On Tuesday the British Columbia native was bound for Beijing with Team Canada, having just completed a series of four exhibition games against Team USA.

Miles wins silver in equestrian eventing

Cal Poly alumna and U.S. Olympian Gina Miles won an individual silver medal in equestrian eventing on Tuesday night in Hong Kong.

Miles (a 1997 graduate in crop science) and her horse McKinlaigh finished with 56.1 penalty points, trailing Germany’s Hinrich Romeike, who rode Marius and finished at 54.
