With the college football season in full swing, the time has come to start looking at the top teams in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) through the first quarter of the season.

James Madison (3-1) – Things were looking grim for the Dukes, who trailed Appalachian State 21-0 at halftime last week.

Points aplenty in AFC West

In the third week of the NFL season we saw the Patriots lose for the first time in the regular season since 2006, Ronnie Brown tally five TDs (four rushing, one passing) and the Bills and Titans stay undefeated. Whether or not you benefited fantasy-wise from these unforeseen occurrences, we will look ahead to week four.

Mustangs take on Utah State

Two weekend tune-ups remain for the Cal Poly women’s soccer team before Big West Conference play begins Oct. 3 at Cal State Fullerton. The first of those comes at 7 tonight when the Mustangs (4-5) host Utah State.

The Aggies (4-5-1), who left the Big West in 2005, were picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll.

Women's soccer defeats Utah State

Cal Poly women’s soccer built momentum leading into conference play after shutting down Utah State (4-6-1) defensively to merit a 1-0 win Friday.

Mustang goal keeper Coral Hoover posted her first career shutout and came up with six clutch saves.

“We were going hard to goal ? you can’t ask for much more,” Hoover said.

Cal Poly seeks to continue Big West supremacy

All the conditions were just right for the Cal Poly women’s volleyball team to catch fire Saturday night.

A regular-season record crowd of 2,917 packed Mott Gym to see if the Mustangs could avenge a 3-0 loss to Stanford in the regional semifinals of last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Zamora gives Mustangs OT win at home

Cal Poly sophomore forward David Zamora finished Jacob Hustedt’s cross with a one-time header to the corner of the net to finalize a 3-2 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

“Their team has a great goalkeeper so when I saw that cross, I was just like, ‘Get my head on the ball and hopefully I’ll get a goal,’ ” Zamora said of his score in the 103rd minute.

Formidable freshmen lead Mustangs

For the second year in a row, the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s leading scorer hasn’t been a seasoned, wise, senior. It hasn’t been a junior turning the corner to stardom, nor even a sophomore providing promising glimpses into the future.

Indeed, Mustangs defender Patrick Sigler, the 2005 California Gatorade Player of the Year who redshirted last year, is a freshman – just like forward David Zamora was in 2007 when he had a team-high 17 points.

Cal Poly defense tries to dominate again

Every time Cal Poly football players enter Alex G. Spanos Stadium, they know the bar – or rather, a recurring sort of banner – is set high.

The trio of commemorative banners honoring Jordan Beck, Chris Gocong and Kyle Shotwell remind of a golden age of Cal Poly defense, when those three won the Buck Buchanan Award – given to the best defender in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) – from 2004 to 2006.

Must-see Cal Poly sports events this season

Until the end of time, coaches will always harp the cliché that the most important game is the next game. But we all know that’s not really true, right? Everyone circles one date or another on the calendar, depending on what they’re looking for. Here are 10 such dates in Cal Poly sports for the rest of the fall season that we at the Mustang Daily recommend circling, in chronological order:
