Women's soccer battles UCSB for Big West lead

Big West Conference supremacy is up for grabs when the Cal Poly women’s soccer team hosts Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. Sunday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

The Mustangs sit alone atop the Big West, a half-game ahead of second-place Pacific and a full game ahead of third-place UCSB.

L.J. a fantasy flop

Larry Johnson obviously doesn’t own himself in any of his fantasy leagues. It was announced this week that the Kansas City Chiefs running back will sit out Sunday’s game for “violating team rules.” Who is to blame in this situation? Is it the running back for breaking rules? Is it the coach for sitting the team’s top player? Either way, there is nothing you can do about the situation.

Party like it's (UFC) 89

Cal Poly has a history of wrestlers-turned mixed martial artists, with former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell firmly entrenched as one of the faces of the UFC for the past several years. Chad Mendes, the Mustangs’ top grappler last year, made his mixed martial arts debut last month with a quick first-round victory.

Third-largest crowd ever sees Poly fall in double OT

The Cal Poly men’s soccer team was defeated in double overtime 1-0 by No. 23 UC Santa Barbara on Friday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in front of the third-largest crowd in regular-season NCAA men’s soccer history.

The game, which was broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel, was played to a scoreless deadlock after regulation and through the first overtime.

Defense propels Mustangs to win over South Dakota State

This story was posted at 12:37 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. The No. 3/5 Cal Poly football team passed a critical road test Saturday, defeating No. 21/22 South Dakota State 42-28 at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings, S.D. The Mustangs defense hounded the Jackrabbits, recording a school Division-I record 10 sacks, and freshman safety Greg Francis intercepted two passes in the win.

Central Coast clash continues

Only a few years ago, Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara may as well have been on opposite ends of the continent when it came to men’s soccer. Now, their proximity on the field reflects the closeness of the hour-and-a-half drive connecting the two.

The Mustangs lost 12 in a row to the Gauchos from 2001 through 2006, and often averaged attendances of fewer than 500 at the school’s generic sports complex.

Cal Poly water ski club competes at national level for third straight year

The National Collegiate Water Ski Championships begin today and the Cal Poly water ski team is set to pull off another upset.

During its last competition at the western regional on Oct. 5, Cal Poly had its best finish ever when it took second in a field of 12 teams from the western United States.

Mustangs begin homestand

Jon Stevenson saw something Monday he hadn’t seen in more than two years. For the first time since Sept. 4, 2006, his Cal Poly women’s volleyball team wasn’t in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

“I looked at it and saw we weren’t in the top 25 and walked off to gather myself because it was a moment that really hurt,” Stevenson said.

Day prepares for Berlin

For many, life after Cal Poly is work, work, take a break and work some more. For former Cal Poly high jumper Sharon Day, the surreal life that came a few months after graduating from Cal Poly reflected the opening ceremony to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

Fresno State highlights Cal Poly baseball schedule

The Cal Poly baseball team released its schedule Tuesday. It’s headlined by a pair of games with defending national champion Fresno State.

The Bulldogs, who pulled off an improbable run through the College World Series last year, lost the 2008 season series to Cal Poly 3-2.
