The Cal Poly women’s volleyball team dominated Saturday night at Mott Gym, where it swept Cal State Fullerton and Kylie Atherstone broke the all-time Cal Poly record of 167 aces in a career. Atherstone, a senior opposite, had not just two service aces to break the record, but five during the 25-16, 25-20, 25-12 win.

At a recent Cal Poly women’s volleyball practice, Mustangs associate head coach Mike Johnson decided to do something that hasn’t worked out too well for many people: challenge Kylie Atherstone.

“One of our big, powerful coaches – coach Johnson – ripped a ball at her in practice,” Cal Poly head coach Jon Stevenson said.

Mountain bike racing enthusiasts in San Luis Obispo will soon have the opportunity to witness some of the best riders in the sport compete in their backyard. The grand finale for the Jeep 48STRAIGHT Mountain Bike Series is rolling in for another year at the Madonna Inn on Friday and Saturday.

It looked as if the Cal Poly men’s soccer team had a Big West Conference match against No. 20 UC Irvine all but wrapped up.

But a 90th-minute foul in the box by Mustangs senior Julian Alvarez set up a penalty kick that the Anteaters’ Matt Murphy was able to capitalize on to send the game to overtime.

Most list activities like surfing, watching movies or playing video games among off-field pursuits.

Then there’s Dally’s.

The Cal Poly women’s doubles team of juniors Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Championships at Stanford on Sunday.

Blalock and Wong, seeded fourth, were defeated by eighth seed Jana Juricova and Marion Ravelojaona of Cal, 8-5.

The UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team had a pair of players score twice Sunday evening to lift the Gauchos to a 4-2 win at Cal Poly in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Kailyn Kugler scored in the 30th minute on a penalty kick, and in the 43rd on an assist from Genelle Ives.

It may seem as if South Dakota State isn’t at all the same football team that rumbled over Cal Poly last year.

There’s no more Cory Koenig, the senior running back who took 21 carries for 259 yards and four touchdowns – including three on distances of 32, 46 and 52 yards – in the second-most dominant rushing performance ever allowed by Cal Poly.
