Mustangs picked to finish sixth, eighth in Big West polls

The Cal Poly men’s basketball team was tabbed to finish sixth by Big West Conference coaches and eighth in a media poll at the Big West media day in Irvine on Wednesday.

Both polls selected Cal State Northridge to win the conference, with UC Santa Barbara as the runner-up in each.

Atherstone breaks aces record in sweep

The Cal Poly women’s volleyball team dominated Saturday night at Mott Gym, where it swept Cal State Fullerton and Kylie Atherstone broke the all-time Cal Poly record of 167 career aces.

Atherstone, a senior opposite, had not just two service aces to break the record, but five during the 25-16, 25-20, 25-12 win.

Kline leads Mustangs in Malibu

The Cal Poly men’s swimming team swept the distance races at the Malibu Invitational on Saturday, and sophomore Peter Kline won four events for the Mustangs. Kline won the 100 back in 51.88 seconds, the 200 IM in 1:55.3, the 200 back in 1:53.5 and the 400 IM in 4:03.

Mustangs try to ground Thunderbirds

During the Great West Conference football teleconference call Monday, a reporter introduced a question to Southern Utah head coach Ed Lamb by noting that the Thunderbirds have actually almost beaten Cal Poly in recent years.
