Mustangs take first of two against Rice

Cal Poly’s baseball team played aggressive, swinging and manufacturing runs early to beat 2003 national champions Rice 10-3 Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.

Following a difficult 10-7 loss Friday night against the Owls, the Mustangs stampeded over freshman left-hander Taylor Wall, who gave up five earned runs in three and one-third innings work, in the first game of a double-header.

In what turned out to be a hitter’s duel, the Cal Poly baseball team beat No. 3 Rice University in the last of season opening three-game series. The Mustangs were able to rally back after being down 6-2 in the fifth inning to beat the Owls 7-6 Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.

With 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. swim practices six times a week, there’s no time to goof around. But Cal Poly swimmer and agricultural systems management sophomore Peter Kline has made time to laugh a little. “When Pete pulls jokes and pranks, we don’t really mind because he’s doing it to help the other swimmers forget about the fact that they’re in pain,” said Cal Poly swimming and diving assistant coach Phil Yoshida.

Record crowd sees Gauchos sneak past Mustangs

Cal Poly women’s basketball team lost its first game in the last seven contests as UC Santa Barbara outscored the Mustangs 66-62 in front of a record-setting crowd that filed into Mott Gym Saturday night.

In what proved to be a back-and-forth scoring affair with nine lead changes, the Mustangs (15-8, 7-4 Big West Conference) came within a 3-point shot of claiming the victory over the first place Gauchos (16-7, 11-0).

Men’s soccer

Former Cal Poly men’s soccer midfielder Anton Peterlin made his Major League Soccer debut on Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium as his San Jose Earthquakes defeated two-time league champion Houston Dynamo 2-0 in the MLS Central Coast Showcase.

Peterlin entered the game in the 86th minute with his team leading 2-0 to the delight of the 1,587 fans in attendance.

They have come a long way from their days playing on a Division III soccer team, or coming to Cal Poly as a walk-on. Tomorrow they will have the opportunity to show their soccer prowess at the next level when they participate in the 2009 Major League Soccer Showcase at Alex G.

Mustangs to face rivals again

Cal Poly women’s basketball coach Faith Mimnaugh was unresponsive for a moment, as if reflecting on the past 11 seasons, all filled with high expectations often marred by injuries to key players and disappointment.

The question posed to Mimnaugh was a simple one: How would you feel about procuring your first winning season at Cal Poly?

“It’s about time,” she finally said.

Coaches against cancer

Cal Poly women’s basketball coach Faith Mimnaugh remembers Kay Yow fondly.

At the first mention of her name, Mimnaugh’s eyes give a far-off look, as she recalls not just the greatness of her mentor’s coaching abilities, but the kindness of her heart.

“Coach Yow was a mentor, friend, inspiration . she was everything,” Mimnaugh said.

Mustangs continue final road trip at CSUN

It’s getting down to nitty-gritty time for the Cal Poly men’s basketball team.

The Mustangs (6-14, 3-7 Big West Conference), who are tied for the eighth and final conference playoff spot with UC Santa Barbara, continue their four-game road swing against Cal State Northridge tonight at 7 p.

Cal Poly Hall of Famer Kaufman passes away

Cal Poly linebacker’s coach and two-time Super Bowl champion Mel Kaufman died Saturday night in his home in Santa Margarita. He was 50.

No cause of death has been announced but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Kaufman was a linebacker for the Cal Poly Division II national championship team of 1980, but he had his greatest success with the Washington Redskins where he won Super Bowl’s XVII in 1982 and XXII in 1987.
