What foreign policy game will Obama play?

As the week of Nov. 4 wound down, there was only one issue that made me nervous. It wasn’t the economy, it wasn’t science and it wasn’t social rights. I was scared about what may happen to our efforts in the War on Terror.

Obama was elected and, to be honest, I was unresolved about his good-natured approach to everything.

Campus is a dirty place

It’s that time of year: winter quarter. During these months, many college students become ill. Not the cool, “You all’s dance crew is sick” kind of sick, but the sneezing, coughing, no one wants to come near you kind of sick.

Contracting a disease can really put a damper on students’ social lives and, less importantly, their academic careers.

Increasing foreign aid is unpatriotic

Last week, President Obama posted his new administration’s official agenda on the White House Web site. Much spending is planned in an attempt to stimulate the U.S. economy, but apparently Obama thinks he can stimulate the world economy as well through his plan to double foreign aid.

Republicans behind the times

The fanfare is over and the work has begun on Capitol Hill. In a show of unprecedented bipartisanship, the president met with Republicans Tuesday to hear their concerns over the first major piece of legislation to come from Obama’s administration – and it is a huge proposal.

New drivers + new drinkers = more alcohol-related deaths

OK, before I get massive amounts of hate mail, I want to say that I know there are plenty of responsible 18-year-olds who work hard and deserve the option of coming home to a frosty pale ale beer after a long day.

No one deserves this more than the people who put their lives on the line to protect this great nation from threats: the brave men and women of the armed forces, who of course can be drafted at ag 18.

Teenagers will drink anyway

In the U.S., people can legally smoke cigarettes, serve in the armed forces, vote, get arrested, have sex and gamble in some casinos at the age of 18, yet they cannot drink.

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required all states to enforce a minimum drinking age of 21, was signed into law by Ronald Reagan in 1984, with the strong urging of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Obama’s presidency brings realistic optimism to the White House

President Barack Obama has been criticized by the press for not being strong enough, demanding enough, or even mean enough. These critics continue to find certain flaws, searching for anything and everything to prove that he can’t be perfect. Is it all too good to be true that we finally found a man with such brilliance, sincerity, determination and impeccable manners?

Some may think he is too na’ve, over confident or perhaps complacent.

The Layman’s Guide to the Bill of Rights

An accurate understanding of the Bill of Rights has been severely lacking lately. The sheer number of people affected by this deprivation is tragic enough, but it is especially adverse when higher members of the political class are among the most ignorant of this document’s most elementary concepts.

The job market’s tough – deal with it

The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics announced an increase in the national unemployment rate from 6.8 percent in November to 7.2 percent in December.

CNN reported that more than 11,500 jobs were cut on Jan. 27 alone adding to the nearly quarter-million jobs cut so far in 2009.

Economic forces can bring about an environmental revolution

Economists predict that the current recession will continue through at least July 2009 (with recovery effects lasting the rest of the year or longer), making it the longest period of economic downturn since the Great Depression. The economic crisis will not only transform finance and business, but the way we think and behave.

Without validation, hope is empty rhetoric

In response to letter to the editor, “Hope is Not an Empty Message”:

“Hope” is entirely empty rhetoric if the reason for hope is not substantiated.

Should we have hope that our future financial situation will be better than it is today? Sure we should, because we’ve seen it better in the past.
