Mom n' pop overshadowed by mass consumerism

Farmer’s Market is one of my favorite events in San Luis Obispo. It’s definitely the best place in town to get fresh produce, and the local music and barbecued food are amazing. But best of all, it’s the one night a week when all of San Luis Obispo shuts down at an actually reasonable hour.

Amtrak on the fast track to slow service

When my mom left me standing at the corner of my new dorm at Cal Poly she bid farewell with the knowledge that I would soon be home to visit via the “comfortable and dependable” Amtrak services that run from San Luis Obispo to Orange County.

I soon learned that “comfortable and dependable” to the people at Amtrak is more of a guideline similar to the “pirates’ code” in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Battle to stop global warming not hopeless

The year is 2050. The number of deaths per year has more than doubled within the last 44 years and more than a million species worldwide have been driven to extinction. The ice has completely melted in the Arctic Ocean and the world is engulfed in frequent heat waves, droughts and wildfires.

Bush's veto shows Republican disunity

Defying the wishes of a majority of Americans and their representatives, President George W. Bush vetoed a bill allowing federal money to go to embryonic stem cell research. Although this veto was devastating to the millions who are familiar with the pain associated with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cancer, and spinal injuries, the veto was also indicative of the palpable disunity present in the GOP.

Why I hate bad grammar the mostest

Let me begin by saying that I have a low tolerance for stupidity, especially when it comes to the English language. This lack of patience with morons can become extremely problematic when I’m anywhere outside the Mustang Daily newsroom.

As a child, I would correct people’s grammar as they were speaking.

Take a stand, report sexual harassment

No matter how far our country has come in equality rights, many “unequal” incidents still prevail on a day-to-day basis. Rapes, murders, hate crimes and sexual harassment seem to be a part of our nightly news and front pages.

Sexual harassment is very prevalent despite its illegality.

Israel must look at the big picture

Israel must look at the big picture

Israel’s current campaign to crush Hezbollah in Lebanon is certainly understandable, but is not crucial when it comes to Israel’s national security and the security of the entire region.

I am not trying to disparage Israel’s efforts to send a strong message to its enemies, but the fact remains that it is Iran, not Hezbollah, that poses the real threat to Israel’s existence on this planet.

Pentagon: College protests are potential terrorist threats

Ever hesitant to have your computer memorize the password to your e-mail account? I mean, you don’t want just anyone reading your personal messages, do you?

Well, apparently the government will read them one way or another because they’ve been monitoring e-mail messages among college students since at least spring 2005, according to a July 6 article published in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

There is nothing to fear but destructive, unhealthy fear

Have you ever once told someone your greatest fears and, instead of coming to a mutual agreement, the other person simply laughed at you? The things that cripple us with fear – may they be spiders, phantoms, or rejection from a love interest – are often considered as absurd and irrational by others.

Who could agree with Ann Coulter?

Ann Coulter, an infamous political pundit, has been making headlines with her new book: “Godless: The Church of Liberalism.” In the book, Coulter takes it upon herself to “expose” Sept. 11 widows for who they really are: “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles; reveling in their status as celebrities.I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.

Zidane not worthy of Golden Ball award

I cannot believe that Zinedine Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player in the World Cup. Even if he arguably was the best player in the Cup, what he did should have negated him from receiving the award. By giving him this award, he is being glorified while his unjustifiable actions are being overlooked.
