California's rebel plumbers

Looks like not all plumbers are simply average Joes (sorry, couldn’t help myself). You don’t need to be a licensed pipe technician to learn how to save thousands of gallons of water a year and hundreds of dollars in the process. According to an article by Matthew Green of the East Bay Express, a league of “plumbing activists” are putting their technical skills to work combating California state codes that inhibit the widespread use of water-saving greywater systems.

Why I can't be a Republican

The fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives is why I can’t be a Republican. At the base of liberalism are the views that we should focus on taking care of one another and our planet (.i.e. national health care and sustainable practices), while the conservative base is focused on taking care of “yourself” (low taxes), “your own” (bigotry), and “your wallet” (big business)while ignoring the need and opportunity to enrich other people’s lives and give them the chance to at least live the decent life that we take for granted.

Taking back our state university system

The California State Legislature and the California State University system have let us down.

Since 2000, our student fees have doubled. What that means for those of you who are on the eight-year plan is that you are paying for three college educations with little to no help from Uncle Sam.

Seventh years aren't just at Hogwarts

Run a mile as fast as you can: 135 beats per minute. Ride a rollercoaster: 153 beats per minute. Peruse the Internet for new shoes: 70 beats per minute. Sit in a desk chair two minutes before class enrollment: 200 beats per minute.

Cal Poly’s class registration, since I’ve been here, has gone from bad to worse.

Marriage and Uncle Sam: a divorce waiting to happen

The fury over Prop 8 involves two equally strident, equally passionate camps; one that wants government to define marriage to allow people of the same sex to marry and another that seeks to restrict marriage to mean a legal union between a man and a woman only.

Climate change summit calls for thinking globally, acting locally

Last week, Governor Schwarzenegger held an International Summit on Climate Change. Governors from Kansas, Illinois, Florida, Wisconsin and international representatives from China, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, India, European Commission and the United Nations participated in a symbolic signing of a declaration to stop rainforest cutting in Indonesia and the Amazon.

Can't call sexuality a choice

Can’t call sexuality a choice

Aaron Baldwin, it’s too bad that engineers don’t take ENGL 145. Gale McNeeley’s letter is a vigorous expression of optimism, not an invitation to debate – unlike your “rebuttal.”

Your analysis of McNeeley’s letter was confusing and off-base.

'Liberal' economic views falsely based

Your “perspective on the liberal views of economics” is on par with far-left media stations. Do you really believe that “the wealthy do not pay their share of taxes”? Did you get this information from Mr. Obama, Barney Frank or another socialist politician?

School is in session, have a seat.

Ignoring socioeconomic factors is naive

In his Wednesday letter to the editor, Michael Berry explained to us that “The two reasons we are a predominantly white campus are few minorities apply, and it just so happens that many minorities are less qualified academically than other applicants.”

I really like that idea a lot.

A new one for the ballot: Proposition 8.1

I would like to commend Aaron Baldwin for standing up for his beliefs in his response to Gale McNeeley. It takes a lot of courage to voice a conflicting opinion especially amidst this ridiculous “diversity” trend on campus. He is right about those gays and their “trite slogans” like “We are all equal!” He is also correct in presenting his view that “no one is born gay” and that “sexuality is a social decision” therefore they should not be protected as a minority or given special treatment.

Welfare states bail out irresponsible businesses

Yesterday, the Dow dropped below 8,000 points. On Tuesday, the executives of the Big Three automobile manufacturers pleaded for a $25 billion “lifeline.” Months ago, the American people were sold the idea of a $700 billion bailout to buy the “toxic loans” that are plaguing the market.
