Capitalism requires homelessness to exist

I sure hope Brian Eller’s article “Giving to homeless not so helpful” (Jan. 10) was a big joke. It was painful to read, yet valuable in that it highlights some of our society’s biggest socioeconomic problems.

Brian urges our student body to “attack the root of the problem” by yelling at the homeless from speeding automobiles.

Beggars not always in need

I believe giving to beggars is wrong. Somebody previously said the homeless population is made up of alcoholics, which can’t be true. However, substance abuse is no reason to beg.

Why should we give to beggars? They didn’t earn it. When I was growing up in Salinas, I gave my sandwich to a woman “in need” with a baby and she threw it away.

Some want to be homeless

Dear Brian Eller,

First off, I can’t believe that you have the balls (or lack thereof) to be able to wear a striped polo shirt and still call yourself a Republican. You are just strengthening the stereotype that West Coast Republicans are weak and are an embarassment to the right wing.

Actions speak louder than shouts

Dear Brian Eller,

It was with mounting anger that I read your hate-filled, overly judgmental letter about the homeless. Have you ever stopped to think that the vast population of homeless in this area are mentally ill? Or that maybe, some of those Vietnam veterans who fought for this country, and have been fighting for their rights as veterans, have been reduced to panhandling?

Other cities dump thier homeless here too, sending them here with a one-way bus ticket.

Eller lacks perspective on reasons for homelessness

Brian Eller,

Your level of ignorance only pales in comparision to your selfishness. The vast majority of homeless are mentally ill. They are afflicted with disorders that require medical care, medication and often hospitalization. They aren’t capable of “getting a job.

Humiliating the homeless won't accomplish anything

Shameful – that is the only way to describe Mr. Eller’s soulless ramblings about how he plans on helping the homeless. Yelling “Get a job!” from your car? How about offering them help or at least treating them like a human being.

Many of the homeless have mental disabilities that alienate them from the rest of the world.

Hookah not as bad as article implied

The hookah article (Dec. 6) had little real information and was extremely misleading. The majority of Shisha (tobacco) used in hookah is imported from the Middle East. Their countries of origine often require tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide content to be listed on the package.

Students need coffee machines finals week

It seems that both of the coffee vending machines on campus – in Kennedy Library and The Park – are currently “out of order.” (If there are others, please be so kind as to point me in their direction.)

This is a plea on behalf of us Cal Poly students who crave that oh-so-delicious vending machine coffee, and who can’t afford it at Julian’s.

Train accident exploited

It’s appalling that Michael Macedo would write an entire letter, based entirely on his own conclusions, completely void of facts and intellectual thought.

As a personal friend of Ryan West I can tell you that there was at least one witness, who stated that Ryan was in fact, not lying on the train tracks passed out, rather he was walking.

Students responsible for their own safety

I read with much interest the lead article in the Nov. 30 Mustang Daily, which wrung hands and gnashed teeth, about safety responsibility for students trespassing on private property when walking along or crossing the railroad tracks.

Nothing newsworthy about Christians on campus

Mustang Daily, thank you so much for your piece on Campus Crusade for Christ. I am grateful, because it hadn’t actually sunk in that there was any sort of Christian group on campus until you had mentioned it 30 or 40 times.

I know there is no diversity on campus, but please, just once, couldn’t you challenge your writers to find something original in our little eggshell sea? From my understanding, nothing that newsworthy has happened with Christians since the death of the last pope.
