Open Letter from the Social Sciences Department

Dear Campus Community, The undersigned faculty of the Social Sciences Department would like to express their outrage at the despicable acts of intolerance, discrimination, and racism at the Crop House. We stand together as a coalition against acts of hate that have occurred far too often on this campus.

Other letters to the editor: compost project removal, Prop 8 and more

Compost removal only takes us backwards in sustainability It is sad news the day that we as a campus move backwards in the sustainability movement. The amount of food that could potentially be composted every day on campus is huge. It angers me that a decision that big could be made without any student involvement.

Political columns are unconvincing

I could spend all day writing why Ian Nachreiner’s column makes

absolutely no sense, but I think I would be preaching to the choir and the unconvertable. I just want to know if there are any “independents” out there who actually read these columns and have their opinions on the issues swayed? Everyone I know either doesn’t read them, or they read the conservative one just to laugh at it.

Prop 8 does not equal religious freedom

Do you go to Farmers’ Market or drive by the Republican office downtown? Have you seen the signs people are walking around with that say “Prop 8 = Religious Freedom?” This is a deviant and deceptive way to sway uninterested voters to vote yes on it. Is that what it’s come to? So I can walk around farmers then, with a sign that reads “Prop 8 = Drinking babies blood”?

Proposition 8, for those of you who don’t know, is a proposition to add the words “between a man and a woman” into the state constitution with regards to the definition of marriage.

Make smart drinking decisions this Fourth of July

The San Luis Obispo County DUI Task Force and the AVOID the 14’s goal is to warn people of the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired.

Every 39 minutes and nearly 40 times a day, someone in the United States dies in an impaired driving-related crash according to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Boycott cruel animal sports

Do not buy rodeo, kiddie animal ride or circus tickets. Rodeo animals are forced in and out of trailers, chased, tripped, tied and abused with prods and tight flank straps; they aren’t “wild” in the corral without use of these devices.

They are shocked, spurred, kicked, jerked and dragged, and of course they feel pain.

Thank you Rachel Glas

I just wanted to thank Rachel Glas for her article on being a vegetarian at Cal Poly.

Like Glas, I have been a vegetarian for over seven years, and I find that the majority of the people that I meet here are strongly opposed to just the through of not eating meat.

I think some confusion has been caused by the use of the term a “real major.” Let me
