History and political science major Richard Spencer Wood, 22, was found dead July 22 in Avila Beach after attending a nearby concert. The Newport Beach native was also vice president of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at Cal Poly.

CubeSat satellite launch fails mission in Kazakhstan

Raucous applause was subdued by quiet shock yesterday afternoon after a rocket carrying small satellites designed by Cal Poly aerospace engineers and partnering universities successfully cleared the launch pad but failed to reach orbit.

What would have been the first deployment of small (pico) satellites designed by Cal Poly aerospace engineers ended in failure when the Russian-made rocket, which also included a payload of several satellites designed by universities all over the world, stopped transmitting information several minutes into the launch.

Cal Poly Ice Cream Returns

After an eight-year shutdown, the Cal Poly Creamery is back in the ice cream business thanks to a $68,000 donation from a Salinas Valley Farmer, according to the Cal Poly Magazine.

The creamery now produces four flavors, which are sold at the Campus Market and campus events.

SLO residents to vote on sales tax in November ballot

The San Luis Obispo City Council unanimously approved the placement of a half-cent sales tax increase measure on the November 7 ballot.

If adopted by voters, the general purpose half-cent sales tax would provide approximately $4.5 million for San Luis Obispo.

Mustang Daily stolen from bins

Nearly half of the total copies of last week’s Mustang Daily disappeared from bins throughout campus over the weekend. By Monday, nearly all 34 bins were completely empty.

The editors, noticing the sudden disappearance, contacted the University Police Department (UPD) to take further action.

County officials purchase portable breathalyzers; expect DUI spike

As a kickoff to the Sober Summer program, county law enforcement recently announced the purchase of 43 court-admissible breathalyzers.

With the introduction of the Portable Evidential Breath Test Units, law enforcement is anticipating a local 20 percent spike in drunken driving arrests, said Wayne Hansen, administration services officer II for County Drug and Alcohol Services.

CSU students benefit from funding increase

Students can breath a sigh of relief this fall. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a budget that will provide $226 million in new revenue for the California State University (CSU) system.

The money will be used to fill the requested budget and allow for no fee increase for fall.
